Sri Lanka | Bowler
Asitha Fernando is a fiery right-arm medium-fast bowler who has become Sri Lanka’s premier Test pace weapon through sheer intensity and adaptability. The 28-year-old from Katuneriya, educated at St. Sebastian’s College, may be shorter than the typical fast bowler, but he compensates with relentless effort and the ability to extract movement on any surface. His international journey began early with an ODI call-up before he turned 20, but it was in Test cricket that he truly flourished. After a debut in South Africa in 2021, Asitha announced himself in 2022 with a stunning 6 for 51 against Bangladesh in Mirpur, claiming his maiden ten-wicket haul. By 2024, he had elevated his standing further, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the series in England with 17 wickets at 24.6, including a five-for at Lord’s. That performance earned him a historic county contract with Glamorgan as their first Sri Lankan player. Known for his ability to swing the ball both ways without altering his wrist position, Asitha has also become a more consistent presence in Sri Lanka’s ODI side since 2025, proving he is not just a Test specialist but a complete fast bowler.
