CSK Turn to Zaheer Khan as Fleming Era Ends After 18 Years

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings have appointed Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027, ending one of the longest coaching tenures in franchise cricket history and beginning a new chapter under a former India spearhead.

Zaheer replaces Stephen Fleming, who spent 18 years with the franchise, primarily at the helm of the coaching staff from 2009 to 2026. Fleming’s departure was confirmed earlier this year when he was named England’s men’s Test head coach in July, bringing to a close a partnership that defined CSK’s identity through five title-winning campaigns.

The appointment marks a significant shift in leadership for a franchise renowned for continuity. Zaheer’s arrival signals a fresh direction while retaining the emphasis on nurturing talent that has been central to CSK’s sustained success.

A Mentor’s Track Record

Zaheer has built an extensive post-playing career since retiring from the IPL in 2017. After representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals during his playing days, he was appointed Mumbai Indians‘ Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019 before becoming their head of global development.

His most recent franchise role came as mentor for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, a position he exited ahead of the subsequent season. That breadth of experience across multiple high-profile setups has given him a reputation as one of the sharpest cricketing minds in the domestic circuit.

As a player, Zaheer featured in 100 IPL matches, claiming 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. His international record places him among India’s finest, with 610 wickets across formats.

Speaking on his appointment, Zaheer acknowledged the weight of the role. “It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL,” he said. “As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The transition from Fleming to Zaheer represents more than a change of personnel.
