CSK and Stephen Fleming Part Ways After 18-Year Legendary Association
It is the end of an era. Chennai Super Kings and their long-time head coach Stephen Fleming have decided to go their separate ways. The franchise confirmed that the decision came after “open and honest discussions” between the two parties.

Fleming’s association with CSK started right from the very first IPL season in 2008. He was a player then. The very next year, he became the head coach. And he never looked back.
For 18 years, Fleming and MS Dhoni formed one of the most successful captain-coach partnerships in cricket history. Under Fleming, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 crowns. They reached the playoffs a record 12 times and qualified for 10 IPL finals.
CSK’s last IPL title came in 2023. Since then, things have not been the same. They finished fifth in 2024, last in 2025, and eighth this year. The results were not good enough, and change was coming.
Fleming was also in charge of Super Kings teams in SA20 and MLC. Joburg Super Kings made the playoffs every year but never reached the final. Texas Super Kings finished at the bottom in the 2026 MLC season. It was not the fairytale ending anyone wanted.
What CSK and Fleming Said?
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath paid tribute to Fleming, saying, “Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.”
Fleming spoke with gratitude, saying, “Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career.”
Managing Director KS Viswanathan highlighted the culture Fleming built. He said Fleming “helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise.”
For now, CSK will look for a new head coach. And Fleming will move on to new challenges. But his place in CSK history is secure. He will always be remembered as one of the architects of the franchise’s golden era.
