Impact Player Rule Under Review as BCCI Polls Franchises on Future

The future of the IPL’s most debated innovation is once again uncertain. The BCCI has formally sought feedback from all franchises on the Impact Player rule, asking them to submit their views by August 31 on whether the controversial 12th-player clause should continue.

The communication, which has been accessed by Cricbuzz, covers a range of operational matters including PMOA protocols, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions. However, the inclusion of the Impact Player rule as a specific point for feedback represents a significant shift from the earlier understanding that the rule would remain in place for at least one more season.

A Policy Reversal?

At last year’s pre-season Captains’ Meeting, BCCI and IPL officials had appeared to indicate that the Impact Player rule would continue through the 2027 season. The latest communique explicitly references that very meeting, stating: “As discussed in the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting, it was agreed that feedback would be collected from all franchises at the conclusion of the tournament on key cricket operations matters.”

The rule, introduced in 2023, has become one of the league’s most polarising features. The 2026 season witnessed a surge in high-scoring contests, with concerns repeatedly raised about the rule’s impact on bowlers, who have found themselves increasingly marginalised as teams utilise an extra batter to amplify their batting firepower.

Player Opposition and Divided Opinions

Several of the game’s most prominent figures have openly opposed the rule. Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill are among those who have voiced their reservations, arguing that the rule tilts the balance too heavily in favour of batters and undermines the role of all-rounders.

Yet the sense emerging from within the IPL ecosystem is that the rule retains its backers. Some franchises have reportedly found strategic value in the flexibility it offers, allowing them to adapt their team composition to match conditions and situations. The BCCI’s decision to revisit the issue, having appeared to settle it, now opens the door to a potential review ahead of the next season.

Other Operational Matters

Beyond the Impact Player clause, the BCCI has also sought feedback on match-day protocols, particularly regarding breaches of Anti-Corruption rulings that saw trespassers spotted in the PMOA area during the 2026 season. The issue prompted the BCCI to issue mid-season guidelines to players, support staff and owners.

The communication requests franchises to discuss the listed areas with their Cricket Operations teams and submit consolidated feedback by the August 31 deadline. “This will help us compile inputs from all franchises and take forward the necessary review and action points ahead of the next season,” the mail states.

Whether the rule will be retained, modified or scrapped remains an open question. The franchises’ responses are now awaited, and their collective view will likely shape the contours of the IPL’s playing conditions for years to come.
