Miller and de Kock Included as South Africa Lay Out World Cup Vision

South Africa have unveiled as close to a full-strength squad as they could assemble for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, with the selection of David Miller and Quinton de Kock offering the clearest indication yet of the country’s intentions for the 2027 World Cup.

Regular captain Temba Bavuma will lead the side in the series, which marks the start of the home summer. Neither Miller nor de Kock are currently centrally contracted, but both featured at this year’s T20 World Cup and continue to play franchise cricket globally. Their inclusion signals that South Africa view them as integral to their plans for the 50-over showpiece in just over a year’s time.

“Quinny is going to be playing whenever we need him to play,” head coach Shukri Conrad said on Monday. “ODI cricket is probably Quinny’s best format and he will play all the ODIs. David will play Australia and probably miss Bangladesh because he has ILT20 commitments.”

Coetzee Returns to International Fold

The most significant addition to the pace attack is Gerald Coetzee, who has not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup. The fast bowler has endured a difficult run with injuries over the past three years but has shown encouraging signs of a return to form, featuring for South Africa A against England Lions in June and more recently against Bangladesh A.

“It’s great to see Gerald back in the fold and, by all accounts, he’s been bowling nice and quickly,” Conrad said.

Coetzee’s return is timely, with Kagiso Rabada ruled out of the series as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. Conrad confirmed that Rabada’s rehabilitation is being closely monitored and that a decision on his availability for the Test series will be made in due course.

Anrich Nortje was not considered for the ODIs. “I don’t think he has done enough for now but don’t be surprised if he plays the Bangladesh series,” Conrad added.

Pace and Spin Options

Coetzee is joined by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman in a six-man pace pack. The spin department comprises two left-armers in Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin, the latter currently captaining South Africa in the Namibia tri-series.

The batting unit features a blend of experience and emerging talent. Tony de Zorzi is the only member of the original Namibia touring party to have been named for the Australia series, while Aiden Markram will be available for only the second and third ODIs.

Dewald Brevis, the joint leading run-scorer in the Namibia T20I tri-series, has been omitted to focus on first-class cricket in preparation for the Test summer. Conrad explained the decision: “He competes for a spot in the middle order and there he competes with Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller. He will definitely get a crack in ODI in the Bangladesh series.”

Building Towards 2027

Conrad framed the series as a critical step in South Africa’s World Cup preparations. With six ODIs scheduled before the England series, the coach indicated that the England squad will effectively serve as a shadow squad for the World Cup.

“With the World Cup just over a year away, this series marks an important step in shaping the squad as we build towards the tournament, while also giving those players who are in the frame opportunities when we face Bangladesh and England later in the season,” Conrad said.

“We have a clear idea of the combinations we want and the roles we need players to fulfill. From a batting perspective, we’ve looked at making sure we have a middle order that can be explosive but have the ability to absorb pressure and take the innings quite deep. That balance is going to be important for us.”

The Australia series is South Africa’s second 50-over assignment of the summer, following a three-match series in Namibia this week that featured a second-string squad. Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Andile Simelane have been ruled out of that tour with adductor and abdominal injuries respectively, replaced by Bosch and Breetzke. The first match takes place on Wednesday.
