Smith Ruled Out as Australia Ring the Changes for Cape Town Decider

Steven Smith ruled out of third Test

Cape Town: Australia’s attempt to salvage the series against South Africa has been dealt a significant blow, with Steven Smith ruled out of the deciding third Test due to a neck injury. The visitors made four changes at the toss and elected to bowl at a sold-out venue that marks their first Test return to the scene of the 2018 sandpaper scandal.

Smith, hampered by the injury during the innings and 31-run defeat in Gqeberha, failed a fitness test on the morning of the match. He had a brief net session wearing a bandage or heat patch on his neck before retreating from view for around half an hour. In his absence, Josh Inglis batted on the Test strip to confirm his inclusion.

The reshuffle is substantial. Cameron Green, Inglis, Nathan Lyon and spinning allrounder Cooper Connolly have been recalled. Scott Boland, allrounder Beau Webster and opener Nic Maddinson have been dropped.

A Batting Order Recast

Green will play as a specialist batter at No. 4 despite bowling during training, having not featured since suffering an abdominal injury in the final ODI against South Africa on September 30. Inglis will bat at No. 5 in his sixth Test and his first since December 2025.

Matt Renshaw moved from No. 5 to open alongside Travis Head after Maddinson’s unsuccessful return to Test cricket. Marnus Labuschagne, under pressure at No. 3, has held his place in the revamped order. Connolly bats at No. 7 in just his second Test, having debuted in Sri Lanka early last year.

Boland’s omission is particularly harsh. A five-wicket haul and a gritty 40 off 166 balls in the second innings at St George’s Park were not enough to preserve his spot, with Lyon returning in his place after being replaced by Boland in the previous match.

South Africa’s Forced Change

The hosts, buoyed by leveling the series in emphatic fashion, made just one change. Speedster Gerald Coetzee returns to Test cricket after nearly two years, replacing Anrich Nortje, who suffered a mild groin injury during the second Test.

The stakes could hardly be higher. South Africa can rise to No. 1 in the rankings with a victory, while a draw is sufficient for Australia to maintain their position at the top. Sunny conditions are expected throughout the match after the rain-affected second Test, with Pat Cummins anticipating seam-friendly conditions early before the surface eases for batting.

Australia’s return to Cape Town, the venue of the 2018 scandal, adds a layer of historical weight to a contest already freighted with consequence.
