Steve Smith was an Australian opening batter who played for New South Wales in the early 1980s. He scored a career-best 263 runs in a first-class match and made a strong start to his one-day international career with a hundred in just his third ODI. Smith got his Test chance in the West Indies in 1983-84 but found the pace bowling tough to handle. Later, he joined the rebel tour to South Africa, where he performed very well, scoring over 1100 runs. He finished his career playing for Transvaal after moving to South Africa.
