MI Shut Down SKY Talk as Pandya Trade Nears Decision Point

Hardik Pandya Mumbai Indians trade rumours

Mumbai: Mumbai Indians have drawn a firm line through one name even as the future of another dominates their thinking. With Hardik Pandya’s trade discussions entering a decisive phase, the franchise has categorically ruled out any possibility of Suryakumar Yadav being exchanged.

“SKY is not up for trade, and there have been no discussions, nor will there be,” MI sources said. The statement closes off speculation that had circulated in sections of the media regarding a potential swap involving the T20 World Cup-winning India captain.

Suryakumar’s numbers offer context for the reluctance. His most recent season yielded 270 runs in 13 matches, a modest return, but it followed a stellar 2025 campaign in which he compiled 717 runs from 16 games. The management’s position is unambiguous: he stays.

The Search for Pace

The pursuit of a frontline fast bowler has emerged as the central thread in MI’s trading strategy. The perception that the franchise was seeking a batter and a bowler has shifted. Their priority now appears to be a tearaway pacer, a need sharpened by the performances of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar last season.

Boult managed just two wickets in five matches. Chahar finished with eight wickets in eight matches last season and 11 from 14 in 2025. With roughly two weeks remaining before release decisions must be made, the possibility of parting with one of them, particularly the New Zealander, remains open.

Punjab and the Arshdeep Question

Discussions with Punjab Kings over a possible exchange involving Pandya and Arshdeep Singh have taken place. Punjab sources have remained tightlipped but did not deny the possibility of a barter involving their ace pacer. The Kings management is unwilling to commit at this stage and has sought time to consider the proposal. The next 48 hours are likely to be crucial.

Arshdeep, the spearhead of India’s T20I pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, would fit MI’s requirements neatly. The sticking point may be Pandya’s own preference. A move to Punjab would not necessarily guarantee him the captaincy, with Shreyas Iyer holding that role, whereas a switch to Rajasthan could potentially offer that assurance. Whether the player will have a say in a trade situation is debatable. For MI, the Punjab proposition is understood to be the more enticing.

Rajasthan Enter the Frame

Rajasthan Royals may also have entered the picture, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi potentially featuring in discussions. MI’s management does not appear particularly interested in any proposition that does not involve a frontline fast bowler. It is unlikely Rajasthan would consider discussing Jofra Archer, although that is not to suggest MI have sought the England pacer.

A Surplus of Batting

MI’s reluctance to pursue further batting options is easily explained. The squad already contains Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir and Will Jacks, with Mitchell Santner also capable of contributing. Most are likely to feature in the playing XI. That surplus helps explain why MI may not have seriously pursued Chennai Super Kings’ Ayush Mhatre, for whom there would be no guaranteed place in the starting side.

Discussions were also held with Kolkata Knight Riders over Harshit Rana and a batter for Hardik Pandya, but the Knight Riders were apparently unwilling to spare the pacer.

The next two days should bring clarity. For MI, the equation is straightforward: a fast bowler of pedigree, with Arshdeep the most appealing name on the table. Whether Pandya’s own preferences align with the franchise’s calculations is the question that remains unanswered.
