Mustafizur Lands First BBL Deal with Melbourne Renegades
Melbourne: Mustafizur Rahman will play in the Big Bash League for the first time after signing with the Melbourne Renegades, the club confirmed, filling the void left by Jason Behrendorff’s season-ending shoulder injury.
The 31-year-old Bangladesh left-arm seamer brings a substantial body of T20 work with him. Across 331 matches around the world, he has taken 423 wickets, a record that speaks to a decade of franchise cricket across multiple competitions. Yet the BBL had remained absent from that itinerary until now.
Renegades coach Luke Ronchi framed the signing as a targeted solution rather than a speculative addition. Behrendorff’s absence removed a left-arm option from the attack, and Mustafizur restored that variety while offering something more.
“Mustafizur is a proven match-winner in T20 cricket all over the world,” Ronchi said. “His ability to take wickets in both the powerplay and at the death is exactly what we wanted in our attack.”
The dual threat is significant. Wickets with the new ball and economy at the death are distinct skills, and bowlers who offer both are among the most valued in the format. Ronchi’s emphasis on that combination suggests Mustafizur will be deployed at both ends of the innings rather than confined to a single role.
A Delayed Arrival
Mustafizur will not feature in the Renegades’ opening match against Perth Scorchers in Chennai due to commitments in the ILT20. His first appearances are expected around the MCG fixtures, with the Renegades facing Sydney Sixers there on January 1 and Melbourne Stars on January 4.
The prospect of those matches clearly appeals to the bowler himself. “I am looking forward to playing in the BBL for the first time with the Melbourne Renegades,” Mustafizur said in a club statement. “It will be special to play at the MCG as my home ground and I’m excited to join my team-mates and bring my experience to the squad.”
Mustafizur joins a Renegades overseas contingent that already includes Jonny Bairstow and Michael Bracewell. Ronchi described himself as thrilled to add him to that group.
A Busy Market
The signing comes amid movement elsewhere in the league. Pakistan’s Haris Rauf has joined Adelaide Strikers after a long association with Melbourne Stars, a shift that further reshapes the pace bowling landscape of the competition.
For the Renegades, the priority was replacing Behrendorff’s specific attributes. Mustafizur’s left-arm angle, his variations and his record in T20 cricket across conditions made him the chosen answer. Whether that translates into results at the MCG in January will be the measure of the signing.
