Kohli and Arshdeep Deliver as India Take Auckland Opener

Virat Kohli and Arshdeep Singh

Auckland: India’s reshuffled one-day side answered the questions posed of it at Eden Park on Wednesday, Virat Kohli’s 74 and Arshdeep Singh’s 4 for 70 combining to secure a five-wicket victory over New Zealand and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl. The decision proved sound. Arshdeep’s four-wicket haul spearheaded a collective effort that bundled New Zealand out for 185, well short of a competitive total on a surface expected to offer more bounce than the T20 pitches that had preceded it.

Kohli’s response with the bat was measured and decisive. His 51-ball 74 anchored the chase, ensuring India did not allow the sort of middle-order stumble that might have made a modest target awkward. India crossed the line with five wickets intact.

A Series of Adjustments

The match marked the beginning of a five-match series in which India are managing both workloads and leadership. Gill captains for the first three games, with Shreyas Iyer taking over for the final two. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned to the 50-over fold, their presence lending experience to a batting order that had been reshaped in their absence.

The bowling attack, missing Jasprit Bumrah, featured Mohammed Siraj leading an inexperienced group that included Arshdeep, Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj. Arshdeep’s contribution justified the faith placed in him, his four wickets ensuring New Zealand never established the partnerships required to post a challenging total.

New Zealand’s Disruptions

The hosts entered the contest with their own set of problems. Devon Conway was ruled out with concussion after a collision in training, adding to the absences of Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman. Tim Seifert was drafted in at the top of the order as a consequence.

Eden Park has not been a hospitable venue for India in the 50-over format. They had won just four of their 11 ODIs at the ground, including a seven-wicket defeat on their last visit in 2022. That record now carries a different complexion.

Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy were expected to test Rohit and Kohli with the new ball, but the Indian top order negotiated the early examination. Kuldeep Yadav‘s inclusion had been a point of debate before the match, and the composition of the attack will remain a talking point as the series progresses.

For India, the result represents a positive start to a World Cup build-up that will be scrutinised closely. For New Zealand, the challenge is to recover quickly from a batting display that never found its footing.
