Who Will Lead KKR after Rahane: Rinku, Narine, or a New Face?
Kolkata Knight Riders are searching for a new captain following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday . With the three-time IPL champions now without a skipper for the 2027 season, the focus has shifted to who will fill the leadership void.

Rinku Singh: The Heir Apparent
Vice-captain Rinku Singh is the leading internal candidate to replace Rahane, who led the franchise for the past two seasons . KKR had already positioned Singh for a leadership role, naming him deputy ahead of the 2026 edition, a move head coach Abhishek Nayar described as part of his development .
“Over the years, we’ve seen Rinku Singh evolve not only as a cricketer but also as a leader,” Nayar said ahead of IPL 2026 . “We wanted a little more responsibility for Rinku to shoulder, and I feel it’s the perfect time, after being a World Cup champion, to come in, take on that responsibility and help Ajinkya Rahane take the reins over”.
While Singh has limited senior captaincy experience, he has led Meerut Mavericks to a UPT20 title in 2024 and a runner-up finish in 2025, winning 13 of their 18 matches across the two seasons . He has also captained Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket since the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy .
Narine and Powell in the Fray
If the franchise looks elsewhere, Sunil Narine, the longest-serving KKR player since 2012, presents an option . Narine has been part of all three title-winning campaigns and brings a wealth of T20 experience .
Rovman Powell is another contender, with his international captaincy experience working in his favour. He led West Indies in 37 T20Is between 2023 and 2024, a stint he recently described as “pretty successful” .
External Options
Should KKR decide against the internal candidates, the December mini-auction or trades could provide a new captain. Reports suggest players such as Cameron Green and Varun Chakravarthy, who has captaincy experience with Tamil Nadu, could also be considered .
The franchise’s decision will ultimately hinge on its long-term vision, with only one season remaining in the current three-year cycle .
