Ajinkya Rahane Calls Time on Storied Career, Retires from All Cricket

Ajinkya Rahane, the former India captain who orchestrated one of the country’s most celebrated Test series victories, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 38-year-old made the decision public through an emotional video statement on social media on Thursday, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned 18 years and three formats.

“The reality of life is that everything has a beginning and everything has an end,” Rahane said in his statement. “When the time comes, we simply have to respect it and move forward. I have always relied on timing in my batting and I have always understood its importance. Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats.”

Rahane walks away with 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is to his name, alongside a lengthy IPL career that saw him feature in 212 matches across six franchises.

The Captain Who Conquered Australia

While Rahane’s numbers stand tall, his legacy will forever be defined by the events of January 2021. Handed the captaincy after Virat Kohli‘s departure following the Adelaide debacle, where India were bowled out for 36, Rahane led a depleted side to a stunning series victory in Australia. His unbeaten 112 in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne set the tone for a comeback that resonated far beyond cricket, and he finished his captaincy tenure with four wins in six Tests.

He made his Test debut against Australia in the 2013 home series and quickly became a mainstay in India’s middle order. In 85 appearances, he accumulated 5077 runs at an average of 38.46. Rahane built a reputation as a dependable overseas batter, with eight of his 12 Test centuries coming away from home. He scored hundreds in England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, often delivering when India needed him most in unfamiliar conditions.

A Career Across Formats

Rahane’s white-ball career saw him represent India in the 2014 T20 World Cup and the 2015 ODI World Cup. His last T20I appearance came against West Indies in Lauderhill in 2016, while his final ODI outing was in February 2018.

In the IPL, Rahane was a constant presence from the inaugural season in 2008, missing only the 2010 edition. His finest campaigns came with Rajasthan Royals, scoring 560 runs in 2012 and another 500-plus season in 2015. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders in 2026, finishing with 335 runs for the season and a career IPL tally of 5367 runs.

Mumbai Cricket Association president Ajinkya Naik paid tribute to Rahane’s contribution to the state’s cricketing legacy.

“Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Indian cricket,” Naik said. “His dedication, composure under pressure, and commitment to excellence have made him one of Mumbai cricket’s finest ambassadors. His legacy will inspire generations to come.”

‘Signing Off as Cap Number 278’

In his farewell message, Rahane reflected on the journey that began with childhood travels from Dombivli for practice and ended with the India cap he had always dreamed of.

“I lived by one simple rule: always put my country and my team ahead of myself. I played this game with complete honesty and I have always believed that if your intent is right, the game will always take care of you,” he said. “While my chapter as an Indian cricketer comes to an end, my journey with the game doesn’t. I look forward to helping the next generation, sharing the values this sport has taught me, and giving back to the game that has given me everything.”

He signed off with a personal note to the fans. “Ajinkya means unbeatable, but cricket has shown me defeat many times. As cricketers, we fail more often than we succeed. My team has lost matches, I have made mistakes, but there is one place where I was never defeated, and that was in your hearts. Thank you for your love, your faith, and your support.
