Hewn Stone in Windrose is a crafted material and you will need it once your base starts moving beyond basic setups.
This resource is needed to create critical infrastructures such as Large Smelting Furnace, Blacksmith’s Bellows, and it can also be used to make durable stone foundations and walls that provide better base defences.

To unlock Hewn Stone you must find a specific resource called Ancient Scraps. Keep your eyes open for glowing, orange-ish metal pieces embedded in rocks or other objects.

You will usually see those metal pieces fused into swampy, dead tree branches or crumbled stone structures. These can be found on Ancient Digging Sites in the Cursed Swamp Biome.
Don’t forget to grab an Iron Pickaxe because you won’t be able to extract the nodes by hitting them with your bare hands. This tool will help you break down the Ancient Debris nodes at those digging spots.
Also, make sure to carry enough healings and stamina food before entering. Be aware, your health will keep dropping constantly if you stay there for too long. Some players also experienced that these sites are heavily guarded by Plague enemies. If you spot enemies, clear them before mining to avoid being interrupted. Go in, collect what you need, and leave the place.
Once you get enough Ancient Scraps, the Hewn Stone recipe unlocks automatically.
How to Craft and Use Hewn Stone in Windrose

After acquiring the recipe, crafting Hewn Stone will become a part of your routine base setup. All you need is Level 3 Workbench and some raw stones. There’s no limit for crafting, as long as you have stones and necessary workbench upgrades, you can craft as you like.
The crafting cost is straightforward:
- 3x Stone = 1x Hewn Stone
One of the first major structures you should build is the Large Smelting Furnace. To build it, you will need 20x Hewn Stone, 10x Foothills Iron Ingots, and 20x Clay, which makes it your biggest early use of this resource.
Some late-game items do not directly use Hewn Stone, but will still require it. For example, Mire Metal Ingots and Essence Arborum are processed in the Large Smelting Furnace, so you cannot craft things like the Enchanting Table or Jeweler’s Bench without it.
