The Needle in a Haystack quest in Windrose is one of the first main story missions you will be going to experience in this open-world pirate survival game. This quest includes pirate camp searches, a naval battle, temple key hunting, duel with the Israel Hands and more.

How to Complete Needle in a Haystack Quest in Windrose

This quest follows a fixed sequence, so you need to complete each objective fully before the next one unlocks.
- Search the pirate camps in the Foothills
- Board the Unsinkable
- Search the camp near the ruins
- Collect the temple keys
- Defeat Israel Hands
After that, the quest wraps up with a few final steps. Rescue the captive inside the temple, then return to camp to continue the conversation with the cartographer and Doctor Galen.
Search the Pirate Camps in the Foothills

Travel to the Foothills location on the map and move to the western part. Kill the pirates first, then loot the camp. The objective only updates after you collect the key items from chests or documents.
Take fights in small groups whenever possible. Camp pirates may rush in large numbers, which means that it is essential to lure them closer to the camp borders and deal with them individually.
Board the Unsinkable

Once the Foothills section is done, sail your ship to the east and prepare for the hardest part of the quest. Here you will face four enemy ships before the Unsinkable shows up. First, destroy all four ships with cannonballs, then shift your focus to the main ship.
Keep moving in a wide circle and maintain enough distance to avoid direct cannon shots. When the Unsinkable loses enough health, bring your ship alongside it so your crew can board.
Once your crew boards, thin down enemies from range before jumping over it. If the deck gets crowded, back off to your ship, shoot as many pirates as you can then board again.
Tip:
Do not rush in too early on the Unsinkable. Wait until it has taken enough damage. Boarding too early usually turns the fight into a close-range mess and leaves you no room to recover.
Search the Camp Near the Ruins and Collect the Temple Keys
When the ship battle is over, go to the northwestern part of the Foothills. Follow the quest marker towards the camp and be prepared to encounter wolves on your way. Once you arrive, kill all the pirates and keep moving so grenade throws do not catch you.

When the area is secure, take a look to the left side of the camp for the wax-stained desk. Interacting with it points you toward the temple key objective. Be ready for another short fight right after checking the desk, because more enemies can appear before you move on.

Follow the next marker to the northern Foothills and clear the camp tied to the temple key objective. Once all enemies have been eliminated, start searching for keys. Search the body of the pirate that holds keys and collect them so the objective updates before you reach the temple.
Tip:
Clear the weaker pirates first before focusing on lieutenants or key holders. That gives you more time to search bodies and loot the keys without getting interrupted.
How to Beat Israel Hands and Complete the Quest

Before entering the temple, heal up and make sure you have bandages. The route to the boss includes enemies outside, so clear the area first, then use the keys to open the gate and enter the temple.
Israel Hands uses rush, combos, and projectile attacks. However, each attack opens a short window for counterattacks.
Avoid the attack first, then strike right after he lands a combo or rush. If you keep attacking outside those windows, he will damage you severely.
Keep patience and try to hit Hands only when he finishes his attacks. If your health drops drastically, heal and repeat the loop. Even if you die, you can restart from the temple gate.

After winning the boss fight, collect Charon’s Obol and open the nearby chest to get the Soul Eater sword. Then find John inside the temple, who is chained to the wall, speak with him and free him. Finally, return to your base to finish the Needle in a Haystack Quest in Windrose.
