Crafting New Boots in Windrose is one of the first real progression steps during the Islander quest. On the surface, it seems like a fairly straightforward process: Collecting a handful of materials, opening the Workstation, and crafting them. However, this process isn’t as straightforward as it may seem. These are attached to a specifically positioned Workstation and will only function if placed under a proper roof.
If you are stuck wondering why you can’t see the recipe or activate the Workstation when you have the materials, the majority of the time the issue comes from how the station is set up. Follow these steps to fix it!
Build the Armor and Clothing Workshop First

You cannot make New Boots at the regular Workshop. You need to create an Armor & Clothing Workshop before you can craft New Boots.
To create the Armor and Clothing Workshop, you will need:
- Wood ×5
Chop down trees around the beach or forest edge. - Coarse Fabric ×10
Craft this at the regular Workshop using Plant Fiber.
How to Get Coarse Fabric
You can get Plant Fibers by gathering the shrubs or small plants located all around the island. One of the best places to farm large quantities of Plant Fibers is at the coastal shrub clusters. Once you have your Plant Fibers, go to the regular Workshop and make your Coarse Fabric.
You will need to create at least 12 pieces of Coarse Fabric in total. You will need 10 pieces to build your Workshop and 2 pieces to craft your New Boots.
Place the Workshop Under a Roof

Most players have issues at this stage.
The Armor and Clothing area will not work if built outside. The Crafting Menu will not function until you move inside a Shelter.
The quickest way to fix this situation:
- Go into the Building Panel.
- Select Pre Built Structures.
- Choose and place Hut Frame.
- Place Workshop under Hut Frame.
If you begin your hut near the starting bonfire, you can complete most early Goals easier since they are close to this area.
Gather Rough Hide and Craft the Boots

Now that you have established a well-constructed workshop, including roofless and roofed structures, you will now proceed to gather the required items to create your boots.
The following items will be needed:
- 2 x Rough Hide
- 2 x Coarse Fabric
How to Get Rough Hide
Rough Hide is typically acquired by hunting animals (Dodo and Boar) that can be found on the island where you are starting your survival adventure. You’ll want to use a basic weapon to kill and gather scrap from their bodies. The tutorial provides opportunities to hunt these animals.
Crafting the Boots
- Go to the Armor & Clothing workshop.
- Look for the Survivor’s Boots/new boots recipe.
- Make sure that you have both Rough Hide (x2) and Coarse Fabric (x2) in your inventory.
- Make the boots.
- Once the boots are made, go to your inventory and put them on.
You will receive added early defense, which will lead to your improved survivability and continue your progression in the Islander quest series.
If you still cannot craft them, check the following:
- The workshop is fully placed under a roof.
- You have completed the necessary early tutorial prompts.
- The materials are in your inventory, not stored elsewhere.
Most early crafting issues in Windrose come down to structure placement rather than missing items.
