How to Fast Travel in Windrose

When you first explore the vast open ocean in Windrose, you feel exhilarated. Between island hopping, finding secret camps, and battling enemies, every adventure seems exhilaratingly new. Unfortunately, you will soon return to previously explored locations to complete quests, collect crafting materials or attempt to kill bosses, and these long return trips will become tedious.

So how do you get back to those locations faster? Fast travel.

Initially, Windrose does not allow for instant teleportation (i.e. fast travel). You will have to unlock and build this function yourself by obtaining an item called the Fast Travel Bell. Once you have built the fast travel system correctly, it will revolutionise how you move around the Windrose world. The following is a comprehensive guide to fast travelling within the Windrose universe.

How Fast Travel Works in Windrose

How Fast Travel Works in Windrose

In Windrose, fast travel occurs from one location to another. You cannot teleport anywhere on the map as long as you have unlocked fast travel points at desired points of any coast.

Fast travel points act as anchors, so once you have established two fast travel points, you can travel between the two points instantly.

Fast travel rules:

  • You must place fast travel points on the coast only
  • You must create fast travel points manually
  • You must have a fast travel bell to create them.
  • You can only travel from land to land when both fast travel points are placed.
  • You cannot create additional place to place movement until an additional fast travel point has been created.
  • When you currently place one fast travel point you can still move from the ship.

This system establishes exploration first and convenience second, which means you must physically navigate to a location before you are able to fast travel to that point.

To unlock fast travel you must obtain a fast travel bell, which you need to craft a fast travel point. There are two primary methods of obtaining one.

1. Find a Fast Travel Bell Through Exploration

  • Smuggling cache at starting island
  • Abandoned pirate camp to the west of starting island

The entrance to the smuggling cache is hidden behind vines and other foliage along the coast. You need to clear the plants to make a path to the chest. Be careful as a strong enemy named the Drowned patrols the area and will deal significant amounts of damage if you stay too close.

Inside the smuggling chest you will find your first fast travel bell.

The second guaranteed bell is located in a ruin at the abandoned pirate camp. There are aggressive boars protecting the abandoned pirate camp, so you will need to clean them out or be very cautious as you loot the ruined structure.

Finding fast travel bells using this method can be done fairly quickly, especially early in the game, but it is a comparatively limited method as you can only find a finite number of bells in the world.

2. Craft the Fast Travel Bell

If you like to have a more dependable way of traveling, you can create the bell using your Workbench.

What you need:

  • 10 Copper Ingots
  • 3 Ropes

You create Copper Ingots by smelting Copper Ore in your Furnace. You make Ropes by taking some Plant Fiber you collected from bushes to turn them into Ropes.

Once you have all the materials, go to:

Building Mode → Crafting and Utilities → Utilities

There you will be able to make the Quick Travel Bell. Crafting makes it possible to make several bells giving you more quick travel points around the map.

To use the Fast Travel system, high-up locations need to be built with the Fast Travel Bell. To create a Fast Travel Point requires:

  • 1 Fast Travel Bell
  • 10 Wood for the original build, or 20 Wood for the upgraded build.

To create a Fast Travel Point:

  1. Open Building Panel
  2. Crafting & Utilities Tab
  3. Utilities Tab
  4. Select Fast Travel Point
  5. Create a Fast Travel Point and place it near the coast.

Fast Travel Points can be placed only on coastal areas. They can be placed nowhere else, such as near trade posts. When creating Fast Travel Points, you must manually place the Fast Travel Point on the coast.

Some builds may require a Bonfire to be near the Fast Travel Point to assist in managing your vessel through a Wharf.

You may construct a total of 10 Fast Travel Points.

There are two ways to get to your fast travel point:

  1. Open the bell interface by pressing the B button.
  2. Use map view

When you see a Fast Travel point, highlight it. Then confirm travel.

If there is only 1 Fast Travel point placed on your map and you want to use that point, you can travel there with a ship. If there are more than 2 fast travel points placed on your map, you can teleport someone else to either fast travel location. All fast travel points are visible on the world map, and they remain active until you remove them personally from the world map.
