Crafting becomes a real job early on in Starsand Island, as Copper Ingots are one of the first resources that actually count for something. Once you start improving your tools or working on new things like the Skateboard, you will experience just how fast you can burn through these items.
Copper Ingots are not obtained by simply picking them up off of the ground. Instead, they must be mined from Copper Ore, you will have to mine for Copper Ore, use Charcoal to process it, and then smelt it in a Furnace. If you are new to the game and unsure how to start, use the following guide to help you figure out what you need to do.
How to Get Copper Ore in Starsand Island

You will need copper ore for ingots before you are ready to start making them. Luckily, copper ore can be found very early on in the game as long as you know where to look! There are bright orange gems placed in rock nodes that will indicate that those nodes are copper deposits. Some examples of where you can find copper deposits when you are just starting out include:
- Just north of the house along the main road
- At the entrance of the Moonlit Forest
- At the southernmost point of your house plot
- Next to the stone door you break open when doing the quest ‘Warm Light’
You can gather copper ore by hitting these rocks with your pickaxe. While it is possible to find small copper ore nuggets on the ground after you break the rocks, breaking the whole rock nodes is the most efficient way to get copper ore, since where you find one copper deposit, there are usually more close to there!
Since every copper ore will respawn at fixed locations, once you find a good route, you can return to that route after resting and continue to collect copper ore. You will need four Copper Ore for every single Copper Ingot, so gather more than you think you need.
How to Make Charcoal

A second key ingredient: charcoal, is only made through the creation of the Charcoal Kiln. A blueprint for the kiln can be obtained early in the main questline “Become an Apprentice Crafter.” You will need the following materials depending on how far you are in your current playthrough:
- Stone
- Gold
Once the kiln has been placed, it can be used to convert the following materials into charcoal:
- 3x Softwood
- 2x Fibre
After processing these materials in the Kiln, 1 Charcoal will be produced. Be sure to keep this material in your backpack for use when you begin smelting metals.

Copper Ingots can only be crafted at a Furnace, not at the Worktable.
If you do not already have one, craft a Furnace using Stone and Gold as required by your current blueprint unlocks.
After placing the Furnace, interact with it and select Copper Ingot.
Each one requires:
- 4 Copper Ore
- 1 Charcoal
Processing time is quick. A Copper Ingot takes about six seconds to smelt. Once finished, interact with the Furnace again to collect it. That is it. Mine Copper Ore, produce Charcoal, and smelt both inside a Furnace.
Many of the early upgrades to your character will call for multiple Ingots so farming Copper in big batches is advised as you will also want to keep your Kiln running as often as possible. Once you have created the Copper Mining Process and have created a steady loop for mining and melting Copper, you can consider Copper Ingots as a reliable source in your crafting processes.
