Gunpowder is an important combat resource in the open-world pirate survival game Windrose, as it is essential for using firearms like flintlock pistols and muskets. It plays a crucial role in pirate encounters and survival during boss fights.
The in-game description has ways to craft Gunpowder through the Millstones. However, the current demo version doesn’t have the building yet and also you will not be able to craft it. Because of this limitation, players must rely on combat and exploration to secure a steady supply of Gunpowder in Windrose.
Where to Find Gunpowder in the Windrose Demo

In the demo version, the only consistent way to obtain Gunpowder in Windrose is by defeating enemy pirates and looting Pirate Camps. These camps are scattered across the islands and typically contain 2–3 units of gunpowder. However, the amount is not guaranteed and depends on loot rolls. In addition, supply boxes found inside Pirate Camps often contain similar quantities.
Pirate camps and their lootable boxes respawn on a daily basis. This allows you to revisit nearby camps and harvest them regularly. Camps are usually found on islands further away from the starting location. Look for structures like watchtowers or small wooden palisades along the shorelines or tucked into forested areas. You can identify Pirate camps by the presence of banners, tents, and campfire smoke which can be seen from your ship while navigating.
If you discover multiple camps close to each other, make sure you set up a temporary base nearby to make daily harvesting more efficient.
Aside from camps, players may occasionally find small amounts while exploring the wider map. Still, in the current demo version raiding the pirate camps will be the most consistent option for the players.
Can You Craft Gunpowder?

Technically, Gunpowder in Windrose is meant to be crafted using two materials:
- Sulfur
- Ash
Sulfur nodes exist in the demo and can be mined using a Pickaxe, though higher-tier tools such as an Iron Pickaxe are required for certain Sulfur deposits, as a normal Pickaxe simply isn’t strong enough to break them. Ash is commonly found while exploring, scattered near shoreline areas.
As mentioned earlier, crafting Gunpowder requires access to a Millstone, but it is not currently available in the demo version. This prevents players from refining sulfur and ash into gunpowder.
Once the full version releases, players are expected to refine specific quantities of sulfur and ash at a Millstone to craft gunpowder directly.
Tips for Farming More Gunpowder
If your goal is to build a large stockpile, you must visit Pirate Camps as they respawn on a daily basis. Kill enemies quickly, loot supply crates, and keep visiting multiple nearby camps if possible. Avoid relying on a single location since Pirate Camps spawned randomly throughout the islands.
Remember that Gunpowder in Windrose directly affects your combat capability. Maintaining a steady reserve keeps you ready for any fights.
