Abhishek’s Blitz Overwhelms Afghanistan After Omarzai Rescue Act

Abhishek Sharma produced an innings of brutal efficiency at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, his 32-ball 82 dismantling Afghanistan and carrying India to an eight-wicket victory in the first T20I with more than six overs to spare.

The opener’s knock, studded with seven fours and seven sixes, rendered a target of 157 almost incidental. India crossed the line in 13.4 overs, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma completing the formalities after the top order had already done the heavy lifting.

Afghanistan had earlier been rescued from a position of near ruin by Azmatullah Omarzai, whose unbeaten 64 off 44 balls dragged his side to 156 for 8 after they had been asked to bat. At one stage, they had lost half their side before reaching fifty.

Bumrah Sets the Tone

Jasprit Bumrah‘s opening over set the tone for Afghanistan’s struggles. He began with five wides down the leg side, a rare blemish, but recovered immediately to have Rahmanullah Gurbaz gloving the ball to first slip.

Afghanistan responded with a flurry of boundaries. Sediqullah Atal struck a six and a four off Bumrah’s second over, while new skipper Ibrahim Zadran managed a couple of fours before being run out for 11 in the fourth over. The score of 38 for 2 quickly became 41 for 4 by the end of the Powerplay, as Arshdeep Singh dismissed Atal and Axar Patel accounted for Gulbadin Naib cheaply.

Varun Chakaravarthy compounded the visitors’ problems after the Powerplay, bowling Darwish Rasooli with a quicker delivery. At 56 for 5 after ten overs, Afghanistan were staring at a total well below par.

Omarzai and Nabi Rebuild

Omarzai found a willing partner in Mohammad Nabi, and the pair set about repairing the innings. The scoring rate, subdued for a period, gained momentum when the two picked up a boundary each in a 13-run over from Nitish Reddy, who conceded 17 in his next over as Afghanistan moved past 100 in the 15th over.

Omarzai launched two sixes in an over off Axar, followed by another maximum from Nabi. Arshdeep eventually broke the partnership, dismissing Nabi, but the damage had been partially offset. Bumrah’s final over conceded only three, applying the brakes after several expensive overs.

Rashid Khan struggled for fluency and fell to Arshdeep for a 10-ball 1. Omarzai, undeterred, brought up a 39-ball fifty and struck two successive sixes off Shivam Dube in the final over. Mujeeb ur Rahman landed two successive fours to take 21 from the last over, lifting Afghanistan past 150. It was a total that offered hope, but only briefly.

Abhishek Unleashed

Sanju Samson, returning to the India T20I XI, struck a couple of boundaries before falling to Omarzai in the third over, early into a pull. That was the only moment of discomfort for the hosts.

Abhishek dealt in regular boundaries, reaching 6000 T20 runs in the process, the second fastest to the mark in 3420 balls. Ishan Kishan began positively, and the two left-handers took 26 runs off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the fifth over, each striking a six and a four. Three more boundaries came in the sixth over from Nabi, and India ended the Powerplay at 82 for 1.

Abhishek brought up his fifty in 22 balls, and even Rashid Khan could not stem the flow, conceding two fours and a six in his first two overs. A century partnership followed, and Abhishek continued his assault, striking two sixes in an over off Noor Ahmad to take India to 130 for 1 at the halfway stage.

He clubbed a six off Nabi to enter the 80s, but his innings ended in pursuit of another maximum, a mishit full toss finding Rashid at deep midwicket. Ishan fell eight runs short of his fifty in Nabi’s next over, Rashid again taking a fine catch. The outcome was never in doubt, and Iyer and Tilak Varma knocked off the remaining runs with composure.

The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. For Afghanistan, Omarzai’s valiant effort and the late flurry provided some consolation, but the gulf in batting firepower was laid bare by Abhishek’s extraordinary onslaught.
