Allen Leaves Scorchers for Stars as BBL Transfer Window Heats Up

The Big Bash League’s player market has produced its most significant move of the off-season, with Finn Allen departing the Perth Scorchers for the Melbourne Stars on a three-year contract.

Allen’s switch carries added weight given his contribution to the Scorchers’ most recent campaign. The New Zealand opener finished last season as the competition’s leading run-scorer, amassing 466 runs during the title-winning run. His departure leaves a substantial void at the top of the Perth order while handing the Stars one of the most destructive ball-strikers in the tournament.

The 26-year-old’s move headlines a flurry of signings that has reshaped several franchises ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Sydney Sixers moved swiftly to secure wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert on a one-year deal. The 31-year-old New Zealand international arrives with 20 BBL matches behind him, all for the Melbourne Renegades across the last two seasons. Seifert’s stint with the Renegades included a notable milestone, becoming only the second player from the franchise to score a century, following Aaron Finch.

Adam Zampa‘s two-year contract with the Hobart Hurricanes confirms his departure from the Melbourne Renegades, extending a remarkable journey through the league. Zampa, Australia’s leading T20I wicket-taker and the most prolific spinner in BBL history, has claimed 138 wickets in 121 appearances at an economy rate of 7.28.

Hobart becomes his fifth BBL club, following previous stints with Sydney Thunder, Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars and the Renegades. His arrival significantly strengthens the Hurricanes’ spin department.

Brisbane Heat completed their first overseas signing of the season by securing Tom Curran. The English all-rounder returns to a familiar competition, having previously represented the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars. His experience in Australian conditions offers the Heat flexibility with both bat and ball.

The most high-profile acquisition of the window remains Ben Stokes‘ move to the Adelaide Strikers. The England all-rounder’s return to the BBL for the entirety of the 2026-27 season marks his first appearance in the competition since 2015, and his first T20 cricket since 2023.

Stokes arrives after announcing his retirement from international cricket, with reports indicating a contract in excess of 500,000 AUD.
