Teams Who Should Avoid the Andre Russell Bidding War at IPL 2026 Auction
The release of Andre Russell by the Kolkata Knight Riders has set the stage for one of the most intriguing storylines of the IPL 2026 mini-auction on December 16. The legendary all-rounder, the only player besides Ravindra Jadeja with 2000+ runs and 100+ wickets in the tournament, brings an unmatched x-factor that will undoubtedly spark a bidding war.
However, not every franchise needs to enter the fray for the Caribbean powerhouse. Here are three teams that would be better off steering clear of the Russell sweepstakes.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
While the image of Andre Russell clearing the Chinnaswamy boundaries seems perfectly natural, the current IPL champions have no pressing need for his services. Their finishing department is already well-served by the formidable Tim David, who was instrumental in their title-winning campaign, and the reliable Romario Shepherd, who offers a more potent bowling option currently. With their core settled, RCB’s remaining purse of INR 16.4 crore is better spent addressing other areas.
2. Mumbai Indians (MI)
On paper, adding Russell to a lineup featuring Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav is a terrifying prospect. In reality, it’s a financial impossibility. MI enters the auction with the smallest purse of just INR 2.75 crore, which is nowhere near enough to even open the bidding for a player of Russell’s stature. Furthermore, their middle order is already stacked with the likes of Hardik Pandya, the newly traded Sherfane Rutherford, and Naman Dhir, making Russell a redundant and unaffordable luxury.
1. Rajasthan Royals (RR)
The Rajasthan Royals have a different problem: their resources are already allocated. While their squad may have other gaps, the middle order is not one of them. With Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, the retained Shimron Hetmyer, and new acquisitions Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, there is simply no room for another high-profile finisher. The smart addition of Donovan Ferreira, who is in scintillating form, provides an underrated finishing option. With INR 16.05 crore, the Royals’ priority must be to fortify their bowling attack, not crowd their batting lineup further.
