IPL 2026 Playoff Race: Who Will Grab the Last Spot?

Rajasthan Royals

RR take one step closer while KKR, PBKS, CSK and DC still fight for survival

The IPL 2026 playoff race has become more exciting after Rajasthan Royals defeated Lucknow Super Giants in Match 64. With this win, RR strengthened their chances of reaching the playoffs, while several other teams are still fighting for the last remaining spot.

So far, RCB, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already qualified for the playoffs. Now the big battle is for the fourth position. Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals are all still in the race.

Rajasthan Royals Control Their Own Fate

Rajasthan Royals are currently on 14 points after 13 matches. Their final league game is against Mumbai Indians away from home.

The equation is very simple for RR. If they beat Mumbai Indians, they will reach 16 points and qualify for the playoffs no matter what happens in the other matches. They can even dream of finishing in the top two if Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad both lose their final games.

But if RR lose to Mumbai Indians, things become complicated. They will stay on 14 points and other teams can overtake them. Punjab Kings can reach 15 points if they beat LSG, while KKR can also touch 15 points if they win both remaining matches.

Even then, RR still have an advantage because their Net Run Rate is better than CSK and DC. So if multiple teams finish on 14 points, Rajasthan still has a strong chance.

Punjab Kings and KKR Still Alive

Punjab Kings are currently on 13 points and their final match is against Lucknow Super Giants.

If PBKS win, they will move to 15 points. That will put huge pressure on KKR and other teams. Kolkata can also reach 15 points, but only if they win both of their remaining matches against Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals.

If KKR lose even one match, they cannot cross Punjab Kings if PBKS win their last game.

For KKR fans, the perfect situation is simple:

  • KKR must win both matches
  • Punjab Kings must lose to LSG

Only then KKR can comfortably qualify.

CSK Need Help From Other Teams

Chennai Super Kings have only one match left against Gujarat Titans.

If CSK beat GT, they can finish on 14 points. But their qualification will also depend on other results. If Punjab Kings win or KKR win both matches, CSK’s victory will not matter.

CSK also need a much better Net Run Rate than Rajasthan Royals if both teams finish on 14 points. That means CSK may need a big win against Gujarat Titans.

If CSK lose, their IPL 2026 journey ends immediately. It would also become their third straight group-stage exit after winning the title in 2023.

Delhi Capitals Almost Out

Delhi Capitals are still alive mathematically, but realistically their chances are very low.

DC can only reach 14 points if they beat KKR. But even then, they need Punjab Kings and CSK to lose, and Mumbai Indians to defeat Rajasthan Royals.

The biggest problem for Delhi is their poor Net Run Rate. RR are far ahead of them in NRR, making qualification extremely difficult.

Big Battle for Top Two

RCB, GT, and SRH have already qualified, but the fight for the top two spots is still open.

If RCB and GT win their final matches, they will finish in the top two and play Qualifier 1.

If RCB and CSK win, RCB will become table toppers with 20 points. Then GT and SRH may fight on Net Run Rate for the second spot.

If SRH and GT both win, all three teams could finish on 18 points. In that situation, NRR will decide everything.

There is also a chance that SRH and RCB finish as the top two teams if SRH beat RCB and CSK defeat GT.

One Spot, Five Teams, Endless Drama

The IPL 2026 playoff race is now reaching its most exciting stage. Rajasthan Royals are in the strongest position among the remaining teams, but PBKS and KKR are still very much alive.

CSK and DC need multiple results to go their way. Meanwhile, RCB, GT, and SRH are fighting for the important top-two finish which gives an extra chance to reach the final.

With only a few matches left, every run, wicket, and over can change the points table completely. IPL fans should get ready for a dramatic finish to the league stage.
