How Bangladesh Changed Its Fast Bowling Story?
For many years, Bangladesh cricket was known mostly for spin bowling. Their home pitches were made for spinners, and the team often played with three or even four spin bowlers in Test matches. Fast bowlers had very little role in the team’s plans.
But today, the story is changing.
Bangladesh’s recent Test win against Pakistan in Dhaka once again showed how much their fast bowling has improved. The pace bowlers took 10 wickets in the match, and young speedster Nahid Rana was the star. He picked up another five-wicket haul and has now taken three five-fors in international cricket in just the last two months.
Nahid Rana is now becoming the face of Bangladesh’s fast-bowling rise. Along with him, bowlers like Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain have played a huge role in changing Bangladesh cricket over the last few years.
Taskin made a strong comeback in the recent Pakistan Test. He took important wickets on both the third and fifth day of the match. It was also his first Test match after 18 months.
Bangladesh now looks much more confident with pace bowling in both Test and white-ball cricket. Fast bowlers are also winning more Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards than before. This clearly shows how much things have changed.
The Time When Bangladesh Trusted Only Spin
Between 2016 and 2021, Bangladesh mostly depended on spin bowling at home. The team management prepared turning pitches and filled the playing XI with spinners.
In one Test against West Indies in 2018, Bangladesh did not bowl a single over of pace in 96 overs. In another Test before that, they bowled only four overs of seam bowling. Against England in 2016, Bangladesh bowled just three overs of pace.
At first, this strategy gave some successful. Bangladesh defeated teams like England and Australia at home. But slowly, the weakness of this plan became clear.
They suffered heavy defeats against Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka. Visiting spinners like Nathan Lyon, Rashid Khan, Sajid Khan, and Rahkeem Cornwall often outperformed Bangladesh’s own spinners on their home grounds.
The surprising part was that Bangladesh had legends like Mashrafe Mortaza in their system, while West Indies great Courtney Walsh was working as the fast-bowling coach.
Mominul Haque Helped Change the Mindset
Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal once revealed how Mominul Haque helped change Bangladesh’s thinking about fast bowling.
Tamim said he often asked Mominul why he picked three fast bowlers in domestic cricket and requested pitches with bounce and pace. Mominul replied that if Bangladesh did not support fast bowling, it would completely die in the country.
When Mominul became captain, he brought the same thinking into the national team.
One of Bangladesh’s biggest moments during his captaincy came in 2022 when they defeated New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. Ebadot Hossain took six wickets in that famous win, while Taskin and Shoriful Islam also played key roles.
Head coach Russell Domingo also supported the use of fast bowlers, especially for overseas conditions. But even then, Bangladesh cricket still strongly believed in spin-heavy tactics at home because of the influence of former coach Chandika Hathurusinghe.
Taskin Ahmed’s Comeback Changed Everything
Many people believe the real turning point came in 2021 with Taskin Ahmed’s comeback story.
After injuries and poor form, Taskin was almost forgotten by the national team. During the Covid-19 lockdown, he started wondering if his cricket career was over.
But instead of giving up, he worked even harder.
Taskin contacted bowling coach Mahbub Ali Zaki and trained in sandpits outside Dhaka. He asked friends to open gyms and cricket grounds for him during lockdown days. Slowly, his hard work paid off.
He returned to the Bangladesh team in 2021 after almost three-and-a-half years away.
Taskin later said that his comeback inspired many other fast bowlers in Bangladesh. Everyone started focusing more seriously on fitness, hard work, and discipline.
His story motivated bowlers like Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Nahid Rana.
New Fast Bowlers Started Rising
After Taskin’s comeback, Bangladesh began producing more quality fast bowlers.
Ebadot improved his bowling action and became a match-winner in New Zealand. Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud came through the Under-19 system. Nahid Rana became famous because of his raw speed and strong performances in domestic cricket before shining in international matches against Pakistan in 2024.
One player who remained important throughout this journey was Mustafizur Rahman.
Bangladesh carefully managed Mustafizur’s workload and mostly used him in white-ball cricket because of injury concerns. Even with those challenges, he continued to perform consistently for many years.
The Coaches Also Played a Big Role
Bangladesh Cricket Board also deserves credit for bringing experienced fast-bowling coaches into the setup.
After Courtney Walsh, coaches like Charl Langeveldt, Ottis Gibson, Allan Donald, Andre Adams, and Shaun Tait all helped the fast bowlers improve.
Among them, Allan Donald had perhaps the biggest impact. Under him, Bangladesh won an ODI series in South Africa in 2022. He also helped identify future bowlers like Rana and others.
Current bowling coach Shaun Tait has also built a positive environment around the fast bowlers. He openly says that Bangladesh’s pace attack deserves more respect and credit.
Bangladesh Fast Bowling Has Finally Arrived
The recent win against Pakistan in Dhaka felt like the perfect example of Bangladesh’s new identity.
Taskin and Nahid Rana struggled early in the match but came back strongly later to destroy Pakistan’s batting lineup. The Mirpur pitch also looked different this time. For years, it was known mainly for spin. But now, Bangladesh is preparing surfaces where fast bowlers can succeed too.
Ten years ago, Bangladesh cricket depended almost fully on spin.
Today, their fast bowlers are touching 150 kph and winning matches for the country.
That is a massive change and maybe the beginning of a new era in Bangladesh cricket.
