Phillips’ Gravity-Defying Grab and Hetmyer’s Century Keep Warriors Unbeaten
Shimron Hetmyer may have produced the innings of the tournament, but it was Glenn Phillips who provided the moment that will linger longest in the memory. The New Zealander’s jaw-dropping one-handed catch lit up the Queen’s Park Oval as Guyana Amazon Warriors stretched their unbeaten start to the Caribbean Premier League to four matches with a nine-run victory over Trinbago Knight Riders in a rain-affected encounter.
Hetmyer, the Warriors’ captain, had earlier dismantled the Trinbago attack with a breathtaking 111 off just 43 balls, equalling the joint-fastest century in CPL history. His innings, which included a flurry of boundaries and sixes, propelled Guyana to 185 for 5 in their allotted overs. The official CPL account acknowledged the feat with a post reading “TAKE. A. BOW!”
The Catch That Changed the Game
Trinbago’s chase of 185, later revised to 182 under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain interrupted proceedings, never quite recovered from the early setback manufactured by Phillips.
In the second over of the innings, Dwaine Pretorius delivered a short ball to opener Jason Roy. Roy, looking to clear the infield, miscued his shot, sending the ball high towards the off side. Phillips, stationed at point, tracked the trajectory perfectly before launching himself horizontally to his right. At full stretch, he clasped the ball in his right hand, plucking it from the air in a moment of extraordinary athleticism.
Glenn Phillips! Stop That! 🤯🤯🤯

Roy, who had scored 18 off eight deliveries and was beginning to find his rhythm, departed for 18. The official CPL account captured the disbelief with a simple post: “Glenn Phillips! Stop That!”
Hetmyer’s Record-Equalling Blitz
Hetmyer’s innings was the cornerstone of the Warriors’ total. He reached his century in record-equalling time, matching the fastest fifty in CPL history with a display of power hitting that left the Knight Riders’ bowlers searching for answers.
Despite the revised target, Trinbago fell short by nine runs, their second loss of the tournament. The result leaves Guyana at the top of the points table with a perfect record, while the Knight Riders have work to do to climb out of the bottom half.

The win also highlighted the Warriors’ ability to win in multiple ways. Two days earlier, a disciplined bowling performance had seen them defend a more modest total of 147 against the same opposition. On Wednesday, it was a combination of a record-breaking century and a moment of individual brilliance in the field that proved decisive.
