‘He Does Everything’: Boycott Names Jadeja His Favourite Modern Cricketer

Geoffrey Boycott names Jadeja his favourite modern cricketer

Geoffrey Boycott, one of English cricket’s most exacting voices, has named Ravindra Jadeja his favourite cricketer of the modern era, an endorsement that carries considerable weight from a man not known for handing out praise lightly.

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast at Headingley on September 1, the 85-year-old former opener did not hesitate when asked to name the player he most admires in the contemporary game. His choice was the Indian all-rounder, a player he once might have dismissed but now regards as the complete package.

“He does everything, lovely left-arm spin, can bat with grit, and is an excellent fielder. He lifts the team with his energy,” Boycott said. He was joined on the podcast by fellow former England captains Michael Vaughan and Sir Alastair Cook.

The endorsement carries particular resonance given Jadeja’s evolution as a cricketer. Early in his international career, the all-rounder was often labelled a “bits and pieces” player, a tag that undervalued his contributions across all three disciplines. Over time, he has silenced those doubts through consistent performances across formats.

Jadeja, now 37, has achieved a rare Test double of over 4,000 runs and 350 wickets, placing him in elite company alongside the game’s greatest all-rounders. In the IPL, he has been a cornerstone of Chennai Super Kings‘ success, contributing with both bat and ball in pressure situations. His recent performances include a three-wicket haul and an unbeaten 34 in India’s ODI series win over England, and another three-wicket haul in the subsequent T20I series.

Boycott’s admiration reflects a broader recognition of Jadeja’s value. The all-rounder’s fielding alone, particularly his bullet throws from the deep and close-in catching, has earned him comparisons with the finest in the game. His ability to contribute in all departments makes him invaluable in an era of increasing specialisation.

For a player often understated in his celebrations but relentless in his application, the recognition from a figure as discerning as Boycott is a significant marker of the respect he commands in global cricket. As India build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, Jadeja’s all-round abilities will remain central to their plans.
