Sri Lanka Stripped of Women’s Champions Trophy Over Government Interference
For the second time in three years, Sri Lanka has lost the right to host a major ICC event, with the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy moved out of the country due to concerns over government interference in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket .
The six-team tournament, scheduled for February 2027, will now be played at an alternative venue. Reports suggest India has emerged as the likely replacement host, though a final decision is expected at the ICC Board meeting in October .
The decision stems from the ICC’s policy of not recognising politically appointed interim administrations. Sri Lanka Cricket is currently being run by a government-appointed Transformation Committee, which was established to oversee reforms to the board’s constitution and governance structure . The ICC has refused to allow SLC representatives to attend ICC Board meetings since the committee took over .
In July, the ICC Board noted progress on Sri Lanka’s revised constitution but reiterated the need for elections to be held as soon as possible and confirmed that SLC would continue to be unable to be represented at Board meetings for the time being .
Beyond the financial implications, the relocation carries significant cricketing consequences. Sri Lanka had qualified for the tournament by virtue of being the host nation. The competition is limited to the top six teams in the ICC rankings, and with Sri Lanka currently ranked seventh, they would not have qualified on merit . The West Indies, currently sixth, could take their place if Sri Lanka are removed from the competition .
Prakash Shaffter, Secretary of the SLC Transformation Committee, confirmed the development, stating: “Yes, it has been moved out of Sri Lanka. It will be played at another venue, but as of now, I am not sure where it will be played” .
