Why Cricket Australia Wants to Privatise the Big Bash League?
The Big Bash League has been one of the most popular T20 leagues in the world for many years. But now, Cricket Australia is seriously thinking about bringing private investors into the BBL. The main reason is simple, the league is slowly falling behind other growing T20 tournaments around the world.
Cricket Australia recently reported a loss of AUD 11.3 million. At the moment, they also cannot depend on a new broadcast deal because the next media rights cycle will not happen before 2031. This means Cricket Australia needs fresh money from another source, and private investment looks like the best option available right now.
Why is Cricket Australia Worried?
The world of T20 cricket is changing very fast. New leagues like SA20 and ILT20 are attracting many top international players with bigger salaries. Because of this, the BBL is struggling to bring big overseas stars regularly into the tournament.
There is also fear that even Australian players could start leaving the BBL to play in richer leagues during the Australian summer. Cricket Australia believes the future of franchise cricket may become similar to tennis, where only four or five major leagues dominate the calendar. The IPL is already at the top, and CA wants the BBL to remain one of the biggest leagues in the world.
Another concern is the possibility of a new T20 league starting in New Zealand in 2028. Cricket Australia does not want the BBL to lose its place in the crowded T20 market.
Why Has the BBL Not Been Sold Yet?
Unlike the BCCI in India, Cricket Australia cannot make decisions alone. Australian cricket follows a federated system where state cricket associations also have voting power.
The eight BBL teams are owned by Cricket Australia but managed by different state associations. New South Wales and Victoria manage two teams each, while other states manage one team each. Because of this system, Cricket Australia needs support from the states before making a major decision like privatisation.
At first, CA wanted to invite interest for all eight BBL teams. But because there was no agreement between the states, that plan has now been delayed.
Which States Support Privatisation?
Some states strongly support private investment. Cricket Victoria, Cricket Tasmania, and Western Australian Cricket Association are ready to move forward.
This means teams like:
- Melbourne Stars
- Melbourne Renegades
- Hobart Hurricanes
- Perth Scorchers
could soon receive private investment.
These states believe more money will help increase player salaries and allow the BBL to attract better international players.
South Australia is still unsure. They are open to the idea but have not fully agreed yet.
Which States Are Against It?
Cricket New South Wales and Queensland Cricket are strongly against privatisation.
They fear that outside investors, especially foreign companies, may not always think about what is best for Australian cricket. They also worry that Cricket Australia could slowly lose control over the sport.
Another major question they are asking is simple:
Will private investment really guarantee bigger salaries for players?
These states believe Cricket Australia should first try to find other financial solutions inside Australia before selling stakes in the BBL.
What Could Happen Next?
Since there is no full agreement, Cricket Australia may follow a hybrid model. This means only the teams whose states agree to privatisation will move ahead first.
Reports suggest Melbourne Renegades could even be sold completely, while Melbourne Stars may sell only part ownership. Similar investment opportunities may also open for Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers.
However, Cricket Australia will likely stay careful. They do not want investors to control Australian cricket completely. Investors may get a voice in club matters, but not full control over the entire BBL system.
What Does This Mean for Investors?
This could become a huge opportunity for investors from around the world, including India.
Imagine owning a BBL team and operating from iconic venues like the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Some teams may even go through major changes, including rebranding or name changes.
Still, Cricket Australia is expected to protect the traditional structure of Australian cricket while allowing private money into the league.
What Do the Players Think?
Many BBL players are worried about their future. Reports say 12 major BBL stars created a WhatsApp group to discuss what they should do if private investment does not happen soon.
Players feel they are losing money by staying loyal to the BBL while leagues like SA20 offer better salaries.
At present, the salary cap for each BBL team is around AUD 3.1 million. Last season, Babar Azam was the highest-paid player with AUD 420,000.
Some Australian players are also unhappy because lesser-known overseas players sometimes earn more money than local stars just to keep the league internationally attractive.
How is This Different from The Hundred?
The Hundred in England was created with private investment in mind from the beginning. But the BBL is different.
The BBL already has a strong fan base and a 15-year history. Cities like Perth and Adelaide have built deep connections with their teams. Cricket Australia also still has a strong cricket structure compared to England.
Because of this, CA wants to move carefully. They know privatisation is a sensitive topic, but many people inside Australian cricket now believe it is only a matter of time before it happens.
