West Indies | Bowler
Father: Eustace Joseph, Mother: Carlin Joseph, Wife: Trishana Joseph
Shamar Joseph is a right-arm fast bowler from Guyana who captured the cricketing world’s imagination with one of the most remarkable debut series performances in Test history. The 26-year-old from the remote village of Baracara—accessible only by boat—had played just five first-class matches before being selected for West Indies’ tour of Australia in 2023-24. After being labelled part of a “weak side” following a ten-wicket defeat in the first Test, Joseph produced a spell for the ages at the Gabba, taking seven wickets with a badly injured toe to bowl West Indies to their first Test win in Australia in nearly 27 years. He had been struck by a Mitchell Starc yorker on day three of the pink-ball Test and arrived on the fourth morning expecting only to support from the dressing room, but a miracle from the team doctor enabled him to rip through Australia’s batting. His meteoric rise continued with an IPL contract from Lucknow Super Giants for INR 3 crore, despite having played only two T20 games at that stage. Joseph’s journey from a remote village to international stardom is one of cricket’s most inspiring stories.
