Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

In a heartfelt announcement on May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli, one of India’s cricketing giants, declared his immediate retirement from Test cricket via an emotional Instagram post. The former captain, who debuted in 2011 against the West Indies, concludes his Test career with an impressive 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and seven double hundreds; a record for India. Kohli, known for his passionate advocacy of the longest format, also steps away as India’s most successful Test captain, having led the team to historic victories, including a landmark series win in Australia in 2018-19.

Reflecting on his 14-year journey, Kohli wrote, “Test cricket tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life. There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites.” His career is studded with iconic performances, from twin hundreds in Adelaide (2014) to a gritty 149 in Birmingham (2018) that silenced critics, and a masterful 123 in Perth (2018) on a challenging pitch. His leadership saw India conquer Australia after a 71-year drought, cementing his legacy as a transformative figure in an era of franchise cricket and format shifts.
Kohli’s retirement follows those of Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, marking a significant transition for Indian cricket, reminiscent of the exits of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar over a decade ago. Despite a lean patch in recent years, with his last Test century in 2023, Kohli’s final Test appearance at the SCG in January 2025 was a fitting farewell at a venue where he enjoyed some of his greatest triumphs. As he signs off as player #269, Kohli leaves behind a legacy of grit, passion, and unforgettable moments in India’s whites.
