Shane Watson Joins Kolkata Knight Riders as Assistant Coach for IPL 2026

In a significant addition to their backroom staff, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the appointment of former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as the team’s assistant coach for the upcoming IPL 2026 season.

Watson, a veteran of 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is, is no stranger to the IPL, having enjoyed a stellar playing career that spanned 145 matches and featured four centuries. This marks his return to a coaching role in the league after a three-year hiatus, having previously served as an assistant coach under Ricky Ponting at the Delhi Capitals.

The 44-year-old, who was an integral part of Australia’s 2007 and 2015 ICC World Cup-winning squads, will now work closely with the recently appointed head coach, Abhishek Nayar. The franchise confirmed that Dwayne Bravo will continue in his role as the team’s mentor.

In an official release, KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as a player and coach at the highest level will add immense value to our team culture and preparation. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class, and we look forward to his contributions both on and off the field.”
