Root Equals Tendulkar’s Fifty Record as England Captain Continues to Scale New Heights
Joe Root has added another chapter to his remarkable Test career, equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 68 Test fifties during the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley. The England captain’s knock of 66 off 112 balls on the second day brought him level with the Indian legend, though he fell shortly after reaching the milestone, bowled by Khurram Shahzad.
What makes Root’s achievement particularly striking is the speed with which he has reached the landmark. Tendulkar required 200 Test matches and 329 innings to accumulate 68 scores of fifty or more. Root, by contrast, has taken just 163 matches and 305 innings to draw level, a difference of 37 matches and 24 innings that underscores the extraordinary consistency of the current England captain.
Root’s latest fifty adds to a career tally that now stands at approximately 14,180 runs in 163 Test matches. He has 41 centuries to go with his 68 fifties and boasts a batting average of 50.89. His highest score of 262 remains the benchmark of his career.
The 66-run knock at Headingley was Root’s first half-century of the series, coming after a cautious and measured approach on a surface that demanded patience. His innings featured 10 fours and occupied 112 deliveries before Shahzad found the breakthrough.
The Comparison with Tendulkar
While Joe Root has matched Tendulkar’s tally of fifties, the Indian great still holds the record for most Test runs (15,921) and most Test centuries (51). Tendulkar’s career average of 53.78 also exceeds Root’s current average of 50.89, though Root remains an active player with time to close those gaps.
The comparison is notable in terms of longevity. Tendulkar played 200 Tests over a 24-year career, while Root has reached his 163 matches in just over 12 years since his debut in 2012. Tendulkar’s highest Test score of 248 not out also stands above Root’s 262.
Root now needs just one more Test fifty to surpass Tendulkar’s record outright. Given that he remains at the peak of his career and still has the second half of the Headingley Test and the remainder of the series against Pakistan to add to his tally, the record could fall as early as this week.
For Root, the milestone is another marker of his standing among the game’s greats. He currently ranks second on the all-time list of Test run-scorers, and with his 42nd century within reach, he continues to close the gap on Tendulkar’s most cherished records. Whether he can eventually surpass the Indian legend’s run tally of 15,921 remains an open question, but with 1,741 runs still required and time on his side, the possibility remains firmly alive.
