Robinson and Tongue Create History as England Seize Opening Day

Ollie Robinson & Josh Tongue

In a performance that evoked memories of England’s finest seam bowling displays, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue became the first England pace pair to take five-wicket hauls in the same innings against Pakistan, dismantling the visitors for 171 on a rain-shortened opening day at Headingley.

The feat marked England’s first instance of two bowlers claiming five-fors in a Test innings since 1998, underlining the hostility and precision of the home attack. Robinson finished with 5 for 51, while Tongue returned 5 for 46, their combined efforts triggering a dramatic collapse after Pakistan had appeared well-set at 97 for 2.

Root’s Decision Pays Immediate Dividends

Joe Root, back in the captaincy role for his second full-time stint, won the toss and opted to bowl first, citing the overhead conditions as the decisive factor. The decision bore fruit inside the first delivery, as Robinson trapped Azan Awais lbw with a delivery that nipped back sharply. Awais wasted a review in the process, compounding Pakistan’s early setback.

Jofra Archer, operating with characteristic hostility at the other end, sent down two successive maidens to maintain the pressure. Ollie Robinson struck again soon after, switching to over the wicket to trap Shan Masood lbw, leaving Pakistan reeling at 6 for 2.

Shafique and Imam Lead Recovery

Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq then steadied the innings with a composed 91-run partnership for the third wicket. Shafique, fluent through the off-side, played several crisp drives and looked increasingly assured as his innings progressed. Imam, watchful early, grew into his role with solid strike rotation and timely boundaries.

A rain interruption forced an early lunch and delayed proceedings, but the pair resumed with purpose, keeping England’s seamers at bay until Imam edged a full delivery from Tongue low to Harry Brook at second slip for 42, ending the stand just short of a century.

The Collapse

Saud Shakeel fell lbw to Robinson for 5, though replays suggested the delivery would have gone over the stumps. He had run out of time to review after consulting Shafique. The key breakthrough came when Robinson, having troubled Shafique with wobble-seam, got one to nip back and beat the inside edge to bowl him for a well-made 61.

That dismissal opened the floodgates. Salman Agha, captaining the side in Babar Azam‘s absence, counterattacked with four boundaries in his 21 before Tongue bowled him and then trapped Ali Usman lbw first ball on the brink of tea. Pakistan had slipped from 97 for 2 to 150 for 7.

Mohammad Rizwan offered brief resistance with 12 before Tongue removed him, while Robinson completed his five-wicket haul by having Khurram Shahzad caught for 14. Josh Tongue then finished the innings, bowling Mohammad Abbas for 2 to match his bowling partner’s achievement.

England’s Positive Response

England’s reply began briskly, with Emilio Gay striking seven fours, including three in one over from Mohammad Ali. But Abbas and Ali struck in successive overs to leave the hosts at 48 for 2. Ben Duckett fell lbw to Abbas for 15, wasting a review in the process, while Gay edged to second slip for 33 off 31.

Root, unbeaten on 37, and Jordan Cox, on 23, then added an unbroken 64-run stand, batting with positivity to take England to 112 for 2 at stumps, trailing by just 59 runs. With the pitch offering consistent movement and the weather expected to remain overcast, England will look to build a substantial first-innings lead on the second morning.
