Chandimal Injury Compounds Sri Lanka’s Woes in Galle

Sri Lanka’s already difficult position in the Galle Test grew more concerning on Tuesday as veteran batter Dinesh Chandimal was taken to hospital after sustaining an injury to his right shoulder and neck while fielding on the fourth day.

The incident occurred at the end of the fourth over of the day’s play. Chandimal dived in an attempt to save a boundary and landed awkwardly, immediately clutching his neck region while remaining on the ground in visible discomfort.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the 36-year-old was assessed by the team physiotherapist and doctor at the venue before being transferred to hospital for a precautionary scan. Further updates are expected once the scan results are available.

Chandimal’s injury adds to Sri Lanka’s mounting challenges in the match. The hosts conceded a substantial first-innings lead of 178 runs to India and now face a demanding fourth-innings chase on a wearing Galle surface. Chandimal himself contributed only 4 runs in the first innings, falling cheaply as the Sri Lankan top order struggled against India’s bowling attack.

The veteran’s absence from the field for the remainder of the day left Sri Lanka a man short in the field, with India continuing to build their second-innings total.
