Monty Desai Departs Canada Role Amid Turbulent Period for Cricket Canada
Monty Desai has stepped down as head coach of the Canada men’s team, ending a brief three-month tenure that coincided with one of the most challenging periods in the country’s cricketing history. His departure, confirmed over the weekend, has prompted Cricket Canada to invite fresh applications for the position.
Desai, who took over in May, oversaw two Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series, one on home soil and another in Scotland. His exit comes with Canada sitting sixth in the League 2 standings, with four matches remaining in their campaign. The top four sides will qualify for the ODI World Cup qualifier next year.

“A short chapter, but a meaningful one,” Desai wrote on Instagram. “Grateful to Cricket Canada for the opportunity to serve as Interim Head Coach over the past three months. Every environment leaves you with learning. This experience further strengthened my belief that sustainable performance is built through time, trust, preparation, strong relationships and collective ownership.”
Desai’s appointment in May came at a fraught moment for Canadian cricket. The team had just returned from the T20 World Cup in February-March, where they lost all four of their matches. That tournament was soon followed by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit launching an investigation into allegations of corruption, with particular focus on Canada’s fixture against New Zealand.
The situation escalated when the ICC identified “serious breaches of its membership obligations” by Cricket Canada. The governing body first suspended funding to the board in May, and later suspended Cricket Canada’s Associate membership entirely, a decision announced after the ICC’s quarterly meeting in Ahmedabad at the end of May.
The board remains suspended. Following the ICC’s annual meetings in Edinburgh last month, a set of reinstatement conditions was established for Cricket Canada to meet.
Cricket Canada will accept applications for the head coach role until August 28. Their next assignment in the CWC League 2 is scheduled for October 9, when they face Oman and Nepal in Oman.
For Desai, this was his second stint with Canada, having previously worked with the team in 2019. In his parting message, he expressed gratitude for the relationships built and the lessons learned during his time with the squad.
Canada’s path to the 2027 ODI World Cup remains uncertain. With four League 2 fixtures still to play, they must climb the table to secure a place in the Qualifier. The appointment of a new head coach, and the resolution of Cricket Canada’s suspension, will be critical factors in determining whether they can achieve that goal.
