Matt Fisher Gets Maiden ODI Call-Up as New Zealand Name Squad for West Indies Tour
New Zealand have announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against the West Indies, with fast bowler Matt Fisher earning his first-ever call-up in the 50-over format.
The 26-year-old Northern Districts pacer has previously played one Test and made his T20I debut earlier this year. He has taken 43 wickets in 25 List A matches at an average of 26, and head coach Rob Walter believes he is ready for the challenge.
“It’s a nice opportunity to introduce Matt to the ODI group for the first time. He bowls with good pace and has been working hard on his variations,” Walter said.
Jacob Duffy is also back in the squad for the first time since the T20 World Cup final in March. He missed the England Tests after becoming a father for the first time. His experience and skill will be a big plus for the team.
Several frontline players have been rested or are unavailable. Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, and Will O’Rourke have been given a break after a busy first half of the year. Blair Tickner is set to undergo ankle surgery. Devon Conway will miss the tour after the birth of his second child, while Rachin Ravindra had a prior agreement to play in Major League Cricket.
Mitchell Santner will lead the side. The spin department includes Michael Bracewell, Jayden Lennox, and Dean Foxcroft.
The series begins in Guyana on July 11, with the first three matches in Guyana and the final two in Barbados.
