Jurel’s Unbeaten 99 Steadies India A After Early Stumble

Dhruv Jurel unbeaten 99 against New Zealand A

Christchurch: Dhruv Jurel’s unbeaten 99 rescued India A from a precarious position on the opening day of the second unofficial Test against New Zealand A at Hagley Oval, guiding the visitors to 291 for 7 at stumps after a middle-order collapse threatened to undo their recovery.

New Zealand A elected to bowl first under conditions favourable to the seamers, and the decision paid immediate dividends. Fraser Sheat struck in the very first over, trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal leg-before for a four-ball duck. India A were 0 for 1 before the match had properly begun.

Padikkal and Sudharsan Rebuild

Sai Sudharsan joined Devdutt Padikkal at the crease and the pair set about repairing the damage. They saw off the new-ball threat with composure and put on 91 runs for the second wicket, carrying India A to 87 for 1 at lunch.

The breakthrough arrived in the second over after the resumption. Sudharsan, looking fluent on 41 from 63 balls, was caught by Mitchell Hay off Jarrod McKay. Yash Rathod added 13 before edging Brett Randell to Hay, leaving India A at 131 for 3 and in need of another partnership.

Padikkal continued his rich vein of form on the tour, bringing up an elegant half-century and anchoring the top order with 12 boundaries. He fell for 80, bowled by Sheat, and India A slipped to 137 for 4. That soon became 137 for 5 and then 160 for 6 as Sheat struck twice more in quick succession, dismissing Smaran Ravichandran for a duck and Washington Sundar for eight, both lbw.

Jurel Holds the Innings Together

Jurel, captaining the side, anchored the middle and lower order with an innings of considerable discipline. He notched a fluent half-century before closing in on a well-deserved hundred by the back end of the day’s play, finishing unbeaten on 99.

His first substantial stand came with Manav Suthar, who contributed 22 in a partnership of 62. Akash Deep then offered staunch support down the order, enabling India A to overcome their middle-order wobble and push past the 250-run mark before stumps. Their unbroken 69-run stand carried India to 291 for 7, a total that looked improbable when three wickets fell for 29 runs earlier in the day.

Sheat was the pick of the New Zealand A bowlers, returning figures of 4 for 50 from 19 overs. Randell, McKay and Jayden Lennox picked up a wicket apiece.

For India A, the day represents a recovery built on two significant contributions. Padikkal’s 80 provided the foundation, while Jurel’s unbeaten 99 ensured the collapse did not define the innings. The visitors will resume on the second morning with three wickets in hand and the prospect of pushing towards 350.

Brief scores: India A 291/7 (Dhruv Jurel 99*, Devdutt Padikkal 80; Fraser Sheat 4-50) vs New Zealand A.
