Bazball Era Ends: McCullum’s Red-Ball Journey with England Is Over
A new chapter begins for England’s Test team. Brendon McCullum has been stood down as head coach of the red-ball side, ending a four-year partnership with Ben Stokes that changed the way England played cricket.
But McCullum will stay on as head coach of the white-ball teams. The ECB announced the decision on Sunday.
McCullum took over the Test side in 2022. Along with Stokes, he brought an aggressive brand of cricket that fans loved. They called it “Bazball.” It produced thrilling wins and a fresh identity. But it did not deliver the biggest prize of all, the Ashes. England lost 4-1 in Australia earlier this year, and that result proved costly.
Stokes also retired from international cricket recently. Just weeks earlier, he had been dropped for a Test after a nightclub incident. Without his captain and partner, McCullum’s position became harder to defend.
“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side,” McCullum said. “Of course I’m gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on giving everything I’ve got to the White Ball teams.”
In the shorter formats, McCullum has done well. With Harry Brook as captain, England reached the T20 World Cup semifinal and climbed to No. 1 in the ICC T20I rankings. They also beat India 4-0 recently.
ECB chief Richard Gould thanked McCullum for his work. “Brendon breathed new life into England Men’s Test team during an exciting period,” he said.
But the focus now is on the Ashes next summer. England wants a fresh start. The search for a new Test coach will begin immediately.
