Australia’s Big Guns Return: Cummins, Hazlewood, Lyon Back for Bangladesh Tests

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon have all been named in Australia’s 13-man squad for the two-Test series against Bangladesh in August. The veteran trio return after missing large parts of the Ashes due to injuries.

Hazlewood missed the entire Ashes after picking up an Achilles injury while recovering from a hamstring strain. Lyon had surgery on a hamstring injury he suffered in the third Ashes Test in Adelaide. Cummins played only the Adelaide Test as he returned from a lower back stress injury. Once Australia retained the Ashes, he was rested as a precaution.

All three have since recovered. Hazlewood and Cummins also missed the T20 World Cup but returned to action in the IPL. Lyon has not played a competitive game since the Adelaide Test.

The squad has a familiar look. Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland are the other pacers. Cameron Green and Beau Webster provide all-round options. Travis Head will open with Jake Weatherald, who debuted in the Ashes. Marnus Labuschagne has been retained despite a lean Ashes run.

Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett, who performed well in the Ashes, have been left out due to the return of the senior pacers. But they will train with the squad and remain ready if needed.

Chairman of selectors George Bailey welcomed the return of the trio. “They have worked extremely hard… over the past few months to return from their respective injuries,” he said.

The two Tests will be played in Darwin (August 13-17) and Mackay (August 22-26). It is the start of a packed schedule. Australia will play 14 Tests over the next eight months, including tours of India and a one-off game against England.

Australia currently lead the World Test Championship standings. They will want to keep it that way.
