Bumrah and Jadeja Set for India-Sri Lanka Test Return

The Ajit Agarkar-led senior selection committee is expected to finalise the Indian squad for the upcoming two-Test tour of Sri Lanka this week, with the fitness of all-rounder Washington Sundar emerging as the primary point of deliberation.

Informal discussions have already taken place on the sidelines of the ongoing white-ball tour in England, and a formal meeting will convene shortly to pick the 15-member squad for the series beginning August 15 in Galle. The team is scheduled to depart for Sri Lanka as early as August 4 to prepare for the tour, which includes a four-day warm-up fixture ahead of the first Test.

Washington’s injury complicates selection puzzle

Sundar, who injured his right hamstring during the three-ODI series against England, was forced to miss the series decider at Lord’s. According to sources, while the pain had subsided by the time he reached London, he was asked to undergo scans, which were subsequently shared with specialists for assessment.

It is understood that even if the injury is diagnosed as a Grade 1 pull, the 26-year-old could require at least two weeks to regain complete match fitness. The all-rounder is likely to check into the BCCI Centre of Excellence for the necessary clearance, leaving the selectors with a tight window to make a decision.

The squad announced for the one-off Test against Afghanistan last month is set to undergo significant changes. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to return, bolstering the pace and spin departments respectively.

Agarkar had previously maintained that Jadeja remains the “no. 1 spinner in the format” despite his absence from the Afghanistan fixture, and the veteran all-rounder’s inclusion appears all but certain.

Spin attack composition under scrutiny

Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar are likely to retain their positions in the spin-bowling unit. However, the composition of the attack hinges on Sundar’s fitness. If the Tamil Nadu all-rounder is unavailable, the selectors face a choice between retaining Harsh Dubey or drafting in an off-spinner like Saransh Jain to ensure variety alongside the left-arm spin of Jadeja and Suthar.

The pace attack is expected to feature Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, and Prasidh Krishna, with Bumrah leading the charge upon his return.

Batting line-up and all-rounder conundrum

The batting order is likely to feature the usual names, with Shubman Gill set to captain the side. The selectors will also need to decide on the balance provided by the two all-rounders: Nitish Kumar Reddy and Sundar. Reddy is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence, and the choice between the seam-bowling all-rounder and Sundar, or indeed a specialist batter, will be one of the more intriguing calls.

High stakes for Gambhir’s side

The series carries significant weight for India, who have struggled in Tests under head coach Gautam Gambhir. The team was whitewashed by New Zealand and South Africa at home, and a strong showing in Sri Lanka is imperative to keep their World Test Championship final qualification hopes alive.

Following the Sri Lanka tour, India face a challenging away series in New Zealand before hosting Australia for five Tests at home.
