Shadman Stretchered Off as Bangladesh Face Prospect of Ten-Man Test

Sylhet: Bangladesh’s second Test against West Indies has been disrupted by injury, with opener Shadman Islam taken to hospital for an MRI scan after twisting his ankle while fielding on the second day.

The incident occurred in the 78th over of West Indies’ first innings. Shadman chased a ball towards fine leg after Amir Jangoo had played it in that direction, slipped while attempting to pick it up, and appeared to be in considerable discomfort as he was stretchered from the field.

“He twisted his left ankle and was taken to hospital for an MRI scan,” BCB physio Bayzediul Islam said in a statement. Shadman remains under observation, with a decision on his availability expected once the scan results are reviewed.

Bleak Assessment

A member of the team management offered a downbeat prognosis. “Look, I think it will be difficult for him to make a comeback in the Test match. Let’s hope for the best but we are not very confident about his availability,” he told IGK.

The consequences extend beyond the loss of a specialist opener. Because the injury is unrelated to the head, Bangladesh cannot name a concussion substitute. Should Shadman be ruled out of the remainder of the match, the hosts would have to continue with only ten players.

Shadman had been a central figure in Bangladesh’s batting plans coming into the fixture, having struck his third Test century in the first Test in Dhaka. His absence would remove the batter around whom the top order has been constructed.

West Indies lead the two-match series 1-0. Bangladesh, already seeking a response after surrendering a promising position in the opener, must now contemplate a rearguard with a reduced complement of players and a top order reshaped by circumstance.
