New Zealand will soon have to fill a big gap in their coaching staff. Batting coach Luke Ronchi is set to step down after the home series against India later this year.

Ronchi has accepted the head coach role with the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. He will take up his new job in Australia once his stint with the national team ends.

Ronchi has been New Zealand’s full-time batting coach since 2020. He took over from Peter Fulton. In that time, the team achieved a lot. Under his watch-

  • New Zealand won the ICC World Test Championship in 2021.
  • They reached the finals of the T20 World Cup in 2021 and 2026.
  • They also made it to the Champions Trophy final in 2025.
  • The team won historic Test and ODI series in India in 2024 and 2026.
  • They also won the recent Test series in England.

Test captain Tom Latham praised Ronchi’s impact on the team. “He’s such a valued member of this group,” Latham said. “Everyone’s game has gone from strength to strength under his guidance.”

Latham also added that Ronchi had been a huge driver of the team’s culture. “We’ll miss him, but we obviously wish him all the best.”

Ronchi said coaching New Zealand was a dream come true. “Coming back to the national set up has been a dream come true for me,” he said. “There have been some pretty memorable moments that I’m proud to have been part of.”

New Zealand Cricket will announce his replacement soon. Meanwhile, the Big Bash League is also seeing changes. Cameron White has taken over as head coach of the Melbourne Stars, while Peter Moores will stay on as director of coaching.
