The 44-year-old takes over from Anton Roux and Gnaneswara Rao, who served in the role last season. Mooney brings extensive coaching experience, having previously worked with West Indies and most recently with Afghanistan during the Asia Cup.
Mooney joins a coaching staff led by head coach Hemang Badani, with Munaf Patel as bowling coach, Ian Bell as assistant coach, and Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket. Notably, Kevin Pietersen, who served as mentor last season, will not return in 2026.
As a player, Mooney is fondly remembered for scoring the winning runs for Ireland in their iconic victory over England at the 2011 World Cup. He played 64 ODIs and 27 T20Is for his country.
Delhi Capitals, who finished fifth last season, remain without an IPL title in their history and will hope Mooney’s expertise can sharpen their fielding standards in pursuit of that elusive crown.
