IPL 2025: Most Overseas Players Set to Return, Australians Face Dilemma
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up to resume on Saturday, May 17, after a brief pause due to border tensions, with most overseas players confirming their return. However, several Australian stars face tough decisions, balancing IPL commitments with preparations for the World Test Championship (WTC) final starting June 11 at Lord’s.
Cricket Australia (CA) has left the decision to individual players, with CEO Todd Greenberg stating, “We are talking to all our players. Many will return.” Of the 16 Australians in IPL 2025, some, like Glenn Maxwell, have already left due to injuries. Josh Hazlewood, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets, will miss the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury, a major blow for RCB, who are second with 16 points and close to a playoff spot.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins and explosive opener Travis Head have committed to returning for SRH’s final two league matches against Lucknow Super Giants (May 19) and Kolkata Knight Riders (May 25), despite SRH’s elimination from playoff contention. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc (Delhi Capitals) remains uncertain, rattled by a grueling 10-hour bus and train journey from Dharamsala to Delhi after a match suspension on May 8. Delhi’s Jake Fraser-McGurk is also unlikely to return, shaken by the same ordeal.
Non-Australian Players Ready to Shine
Most non-Australian overseas players are set to rejoin their teams, with many currently holidaying in Dubai, Singapore, and the Maldives. Gujarat Titans’ South African stars Kagiso Rabada, who stayed in India, and Gerald Coetzee, returning on May 14, are confirmed for all league games, with the team eyeing a playoff berth. Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler, among the season’s top five run-scorers, will land in Ahmedabad within 24 hours. Delhi Capitals’ Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs, along with RCB’s Liam Livingstone, Lungi Ngidi, and Nuwan Thushara, are also expected back.
Team Updates and Playoff Race
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), out of playoff contention, have assurances from players like Devon Conway, though Rachin Ravindra’s return is unconfirmed. Punjab Kings (PBKS) await clarity on Josh Inglis, selected for the WTC final, and Marcus Stoinis, while other PBKS overseas players are likely to participate. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are optimistic about their overseas recruits, with MI keeping plans under wraps for strategic reasons.
Delhi Capitals, fifth in the standings, remain in the playoff hunt, making the return of players like du Plessis crucial. The IPL, running until May 30, has 13 league matches and four playoff games left, promising intense action as teams vie for the title.
With the IPL resuming amidst a packed cricket calendar, the availability of overseas stars adds excitement for fans. However, the absence of key players like Hazlewood and potential no-shows like Starc highlight the challenges of scheduling high-profile T20 leagues alongside international commitments. Stay tuned for more updates as the IPL 2025 season heats up!
