Stardew Valley now lets you use cheat commands without installing any mods. Since update 1.6.9, you can enable official console-style commands by editing your save file. Once enabled, these cheats let you add money, spawn items, change relationships, and more. This guide explains how to turn cheats on and how to use them safely, step by step, using only the in-game system.
How to Use Cheat Commands in Stardew Valley
How to Enable Cheats
After launching the game, you will not be able to input cheat commands. They must first be allowed in your save file.
Make a backup of your save first so that you have the option to restore it in case of any issues. After that, find the location of your Stardew Valley save folder on your computer.
- For Windows, launch Run and type in %appdata%, then navigate to StardewValley > Saves.
- For Mac, start Finder and go to ~/.config/StardewValley/Saves.
- In the Saves folder, find and open the file that corresponds to your farm name (with numbers). Do not open the file that has “_old” at the end.
Use the search function in the file to find allowChatCheats. It will be set to false. Change this to true, then save and close the file. The cheating will now be possible with that save.
How to Open the Cheat Command Bar
- Load your game normally after editing the save.
- Once you are in-game, press T on your keyboard. This opens the chat bar, which is now used for cheat commands.
- All cheat commands start with a forward slash /.
Basic Cheat Commands You Can Use
- There are two main cheat types you will use most often.
- The money command lets you add gold instantly.
- Typing /money 1000 gives you 1,000g. You can replace the number with any amount.
- The debug command is more powerful and controls many systems in the game. For example, /debug item 113 places a chicken statue directly into your inventory.
How Debug Commands Work
Debug commands let you change game systems instead of just adding money. One of the most common uses is spawning items.
To spawn an item, type /debug item followed by the item’s ID number. Each item in the game has a specific ID, covering crops, furniture, tools, clothes, and more.
Debug commands can also unlock content, heal your character, teleport you, or change relationships with villagers.
Useful Debug Commands to Know
Some commands help with progression and testing. Others are useful for casual play or experimentation.
You can refill health and energy instantly, unlock all cooking recipes, or gain max friendship with every villager. You can also warp home, unlock special wallet items, or open full item menus where you can click to add things instead of typing IDs.
There are also commands that let you instantly end events, add or remove quests, or open the character customization menu at any time.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
Cheat commands permanently affect your save file. Using them can skip progression, break quest flow, or remove challenge from the game. If you want to experiment, it is best to use a separate save file.
Some commands are very powerful and should be used carefully. For example, clearing your inventory or removing quests cannot always be undone.
Cheats work only on saves where allowChatCheats is set to true. They do not activate automatically for other farms.
