Why Did India Drop a World Cup-Winning Captain? Agarkar Finally Opens Up
It’s never easy to drop a World Cup-winning captain. But that’s exactly what India’s selectors have done.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, recently explained why Suryakumar Yadav was left out of the T20I side and replaced by Shreyas Iyer as captain.
Speaking in Mumbai, Agarkar admitted it was a tough call. “With regards to Surya, obviously, it’s a tough one… having just won the World Cup.”
So what went into the decision? Two main things: Surya’s recent form and India’s planning for the next T20 World Cup.
“Partly his own form, but also looking at the next two-year cycle… we thought this was the best way forward,” Agarkar said.
He made it clear that conversations like these are never easy. “Someone who led you in the World Cup, it’s not the easiest thing to try and change.”
But Agarkar also stressed that the team’s future comes first. “We’re doing everything in the interest of what the team needs going forward.”
Why Shreyas Iyer?
The selectors didn’t just drop Surya; they picked a captain they believe in. Shreyas Iyer has led KKR to an IPL title and took Punjab Kings to the final. He also ended IPL 2026 with a century in his last innings.
“Shreyas is a well-deserving candidate,” Agarkar said. “He’s seen everything that a captain possibly can.”
Agarkar also pointed out that Iyer’s batting form made the decision a bit easier. When someone is playing that well, it’s hard to leave them out.
Agarkar said the IPL wasn’t the only reason. “Whether the IPL form dictated it, I’m not so sure that’s the case.”
But overall, the selectors felt it was time to look ahead. A new T20 World Cup cycle has begun, and with it, a new leader.
Dropping a World Cup-winning captain is never simple. But Agarkar and the selectors believe this is the right move for Indian cricket’s future. Now, all eyes will be on how Suryakumar responds.
