The 25-year-old from Epsom, Surrey, made an immediate impact with his counterattacking batting, scoring a hundred against Sri Lanka in only his fifth Test innings after impressive knocks of 70 and 95 against West Indies on debut. A product of Whitgift School, Smith was released by AFC Wimbledon at 15 before committing fully to cricket, making his professional debut a week before his 18th birthday. His rise through Surrey’s ranks was swift, and he earned recognition during the 2022-23 winter with an extraordinary 71-ball hundred for England Lions against Sri Lanka A in Galle. His ability was further underlined with a remarkable 184 not out against India, coming in at 84 for 5 before adding 303 with Harry Brook. Transformed into an attacking white-ball opener by Brendon McCullum, Smith has also impressed in franchise cricket, including the Hundred and ILT20, cementing his reputation as one of England’s most exciting young talents.
