Ryan Cook Steps Down as Netherlands Coach to Prioritise Family
Ryan Cook is moving on, the head coach of the Netherlands men’s cricket team has stepped down from his role. The decision comes after he and his partner Emma welcomed their second child. Family comes first, and Cook has chosen to be there for his growing family.
For now, the team will not be left without direction. Heino Kuhn, the former South Africa batter, will take charge as interim coach. Kuhn has been working with the team as a batting coach under Cook. He knows the players and the system well.
Cook took over the job in May 2022. In just four years, he made a big difference. He led the team to the 2022 T20 World Cup. That was special. Not just because they qualified, but because they beat Zimbabwe and South Africa on the biggest stage.
He also helped the team qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup. It was their first appearance since 2011. And they didn’t just go there to lose. They beat South Africa and Bangladesh, proving they could compete with the best.
Cook said coaching the Netherlands team was one of the best experiences of his career. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to lead the journey towards professionalism and creating a competitive cricket team with strong values,” he said.
The KNCB chief executive also praised his impact. “Ryan Cook has had an enormous impact on the entire system of Dutch cricket,” he said.
Captain Scott Edwards also paid tribute. “His passion, professionalism and commitment to creating a strong culture have helped us achieve some memorable performances,” he said.
The team is currently third in the CWC League 2 table. They have 32 points from 28 matches. Kuhn will now lead them in the upcoming matches. The foundation is strong. But it will be interesting to see how the team moves forward without Cook.
For now, cricket fans will wish him well. His next challenge may not be on the field, but it will be just as rewarding.
