Cricket World Cup 2027 Dates Announced: Seven Weeks of Action Across Three Countries

World CUP

The next ODI World Cup finally has a timeline. And it is going to be a long one.

The ICC has locked in a window from October 1 to November 21, 2027. The tournament will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This will be the first 50-over World Cup since 2019 to feature 14 teams instead of just 10.

Warm-up matches will run from October 1 to October 7. The main tournament will likely kick off on Friday, October 8. The final is set for Sunday, November 21. That gives us seven full weeks of cricket.

South Africa will host the bulk of the games. They get 40 out of 54 matches. Zimbabwe will host most of the remaining 14, with Namibia getting a few. A Zimbabwe Cricket official confirmed that besides Harare and Bulawayo, a third venue will be added. The scenic town of Victoria Falls, on the Zambia border, is expected to be one of the venues.

The last two World Cups had 10 teams playing a single round-robin. That is gone.

In 2027, the 14 teams will be split into two groups of seven. Each team plays the other six in its group. Then the top three from each group move to a Super Six stage. After that, we have the usual semifinals and final.

So more teams, more matches, and more chances for upsets.

The ICC will hold its Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh from July 8 to 11. More news on venues, the opening match, and the final is expected after that.

For now, fans in Africa have a massive cricket carnival to look forward to. And for the rest of us, we can start marking our calendars.
