Ravichandran Ashwin Set to Exit Chennai Super Kings
Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is set to bring his association with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a close ahead of the IPL 2026 season. While the exact reasons for this anticipated split remain undisclosed, Ashwin is understood to have conveyed his decision to the franchise, paving the way for a significant change in both his career and CSK’s roster planning.
In addition to his on-field role, Ashwin has been serving as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy for the past year. However, with a move to another IPL team a likely scenario, he is expected to relinquish the position to avoid any conflict of interest.
A stalwart of Indian cricket, Ashwin brings with him an enviable IPL record; 221 matches, 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.29, and 833 runs with a strike rate of 118. He returned to CSK last year in a ₹9.75 crore deal after spending nearly a decade with Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals from 2016 to 2024. His IPL journey began with CSK in 2009, where he played six seasons under MS Dhoni, becoming a key figure in their early successes.
This development comes amid a week of closed-door meetings in Chennai involving CSK’s top management, MS Dhoni, and current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad; believed to be part of broader preparations for the upcoming season. Whether Ashwin’s future was a central topic remains unconfirmed, but the timing suggests a strategic reshuffle in the squad.
As for what comes next, the 38-year-old could be traded if a buyer matches CSK’s expectations, or he may enter the IPL auction pool. Given his experience and all-round capabilities, Ashwin is likely to attract significant interest from other franchises.
If confirmed, his departure will mark the end of a celebrated chapter with CSK; one that began over 15 years ago; while igniting fresh intrigue about where his next IPL innings will begin.
