Moises Henriques Retires from Australian Domestic Cricket After 22-Year Career

Moises Henriques

Moises Henriques has decided to hang up his boots. After 22 years, the veteran all-rounder is retiring from New South Wales and Sydney Sixers cricket.

The 39-year-old holds a special record. He is Australia’s most-capped domestic cricketer with 420 appearances across formats. He also holds the record for most BBL appearances, 154 games.

Henriques had back surgery in February. He led the Sixers to the BBL 15 final last season. He also played in NSW’s victorious One-Day Cup campaign. But when he was not offered a contract for BBL16, he knew it was time.

He did receive interest from other BBL teams. But it did not feel right. “After a bit of deliberation, I’ve decided it’s time for me to call stumps,” he said.

Henriques won three Big Bash titles. He is the Sixers’ highest run-scorer with 3,410 runs. He also played for Australia in all three formats, featuring in four Tests, 16 ODIs, and 24 T20Is between 2009 and 2021.

In his retirement statement, he thanked his teammates and support staff. “If it weren’t for those relationships and the deep care I have for them, I’m sure I would have reached this day much earlier,” he said.

Henriques will not be away from the game for long. He will continue as a director of the Cricket NSW Foundation. He also remains available for overseas leagues.

And here’s an interesting twist: he is set to represent Portugal, his country of birth in the European qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup. A new chapter awaits.
